Spafford kicked off a two-night stand at Soundcheck Studios on Saturday (January 13), the latest stop on their extensive winter tour. The Arizona-based jam quartet worked debuts of a new original and an Olivia Rodrigo cover into the setlist for the sold-out concert at the venue in Pembroke, Massachusetts.
The group has made Soundcheck Studios a regular stop over the last year since Cory Schechtman replaced founding keyboardist Andrew “Red” Johnson. Schechtman played the room numerous times as a member of The New Motif and now has been on keys for all six Spafford shows at the space dating back to January 25, 2023.

Spafford — Schechtman, guitarist Brian Moss, bassist Jordan Fairless and drummer Nick Tkachyk — provided the capacity crowd with more than three hours of music on Saturday. The four-piece picked “Skyline,” an original debuted last October, to launch the first set. Fan-favorite “All My Friends” then prefaced an adventurous “Bee Jam” that clocked in around 25 minutes.
Saturday’s “Bee Jam” bled into the premiere performance of the original instrumental “Can’t Find My Vape.” The funky workout features Moss and Schechtman exchanging melodies over a deep groove held down by the rhythm section of Fairless and Tkachyk. Brian Moss employed a tasty disorted tone for the solo at the heart of the new composition. The newest original in the Spafford repertoire led into a set-closing “The Remedy.”

Spafford uncorked a massive 20-minute “Giants In The Light” to open the second set on Saturday. A seamless and exploratory start to the frame continued with a well-jammed take on the Pink Floyd classic “Run Like Hell” and spot-on version of live staple “America.” Brian Moss then led his bandmates through their first-ever performance of Olivia Rodrigo’s “Can’t Catch Me Now” to conclude the set. Rodrigo put out the hit single last fall as part of the soundtrack for the 2023 film The Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes.
Moss, Schechtman, Tkachyk and Fairless came back to the Soundcheck Studios stage for a two-song encore on Saturday. Spafford paired frequently played originals “When It Falls” and “The Reprise” to end their first night in Pembroke.
