Phil Lesh And Friends Cover Skynyrd At Capitol Theatre
By Scott Bernstein Nov 4, 2013 • 7:00 am PST

American Jubilee’s opening set on Sunday included “I Ain’t The One,” “Tuesday’s Gone” and “Gimme Three Steps” off Skynyrd’s 1973 debut. Phil’s band -which for this tour features guitarists Anders Osborne, Grahame Lesh and Luther Dickinson, keyboardist Jason Croasby and drummer Tony Leone -kicked off their first of two sets with a rollicking “Tennessee Jed” sung by Leone. From there, the band started working Skynyrd songs into the performance with Osborne leading the group through “Simple Man.” Covers weren’t only limited to Skynyrd tunes as the first set also contained takes on Tim Bluhm’s “Squeaky Wheel,” Ryan Adams’ “Let It Ride” and Anders’ “Burning On The Inside.”
Phil & Friends’ second set began with a cover of Skynyrd’s “Mississippi Kid” and continued with another nod to the South in the Dead’s “Alabama Getaway.” Those waiting to hear Lesh play “Free Bird” finally had their chance towards the end of the closing stanza when the band worked the oft-requested classic into “Dark Star.”
