Full Show Video: Phil Lesh & Friends Fit Funkadelic Cover Into New Year’s Eve Show In Hawaii

Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh celebrated the end of 2017 and the beginning of 2018 with a three-show run in Hawaii. A special version of Phil Lesh & Friends featuring guitarist Eric Krasno as well as The Terrapin Family Band of Grahame Lesh, Ross James, Alex Koford and Jason Crosby played Maui on December 28 and 29 and Honolulu on New Year’s Eve.

Phil Lesh & Friends honored the surfing history of Hawaii by opening the first show with a debut cover of “Pipeline” by The Chantays. The band then presented a mix of Grateful Dead classics, originals penned by Ross and Grahame and covers of Dire Straits and Chuck Berry. On the 29th, GD tunes such as “Cold Rain & Snow,” “Brown-Eyed Women,” “West L.A. Fadeaway” and “Dark Star” were accompanied by Jimmy Cliff’s “The Harder They Come,” Bob Dylan’s “Tangled Up In Blue” and “Whole Lotta Love” by Led Zeppelin.

Lesh will soon turn 78, but he still led his ensemble through three sets at the Hawaii Theatre on New Year’s Eve. Phil & Friends opened with “Jack Straw” and then covered “Tumbling Dice” by The Rolling Stones and “Sweet Jane” by The Velvet Underground. “Cream Puff War” came next along with “Sugaree” and The Band’s “The Shape I’m In.” The concert’s second set began with an inventive “Help On The Way” > “Slipknot!” > “Casey Jones” > “Slipknot!” sequence. Phil then sang his signature song, “Box Of Rain” which led into “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall.” The frame ended with a run of “Wharf Rat” > “Truckin'” > “New Speedway Boogie.”

Sunday’s third set featured a “Shakedown Street” opener to begin 2018. Phil and his band then weaved many songs in and out of “Viola Lee Blues” including Funkadelic’s “Get Off Your Ass & Jam,” “Cumberland Blues” and “Bertha.” For the finale, the band chose a Grateful Dead New Year’s Eve staple – “Sugar Magnolia.”
