No less an authority than Crescent City icon Dr. John calls the sublimely talented pianist and singer Henry Butler “the pride of New Orleans,” and these rare Bay Area performances are a gift to local jazz fans. Considered the premier exponent of the great New Orleans jazz and blues piano tradition, Butler is a ten-time Best Blues Instrumentalist Award nominee whose distinctive style is a rich amalgam of jazz, Caribbean, classical, pop, blues and R&B that combines the advanced harmonic approach of McCoy Tyner with the rollicking, rumba-soaked sound of Professor Longhair. Blinded by glaucoma in infancy, Butler began playing trombone at the Louisiana State School for the Blind before switching to piano and beginning his professional career at 14. Studies with Cannonball Adderley, George Duke and Alvin Batiste helped shape Butler’s musical identity, and he’s gone on to record ten superb albums since his 1986 debut, Fivin’ Around. After losing his home, piano, unpublished compositions and master tapes to Hurricane Katrina, Butler has rebounded, taking part in the New Orleans Social Club Project and appearing in HBO’s smash-hit series, Treme. Don’t miss this exclusive series of shows with this legend of New Orleans music, up close and personal in the Joe Henderson Lab.
