One of the stars of our 40th anniversary celebration in March (at his first Ashkenaz appearance since 2006), Everton Blender returns after a busy summer tour, bringing his inspired conscious reggae. Headlining a full night of roots and newer reggae, Everton Blender boasts one of the sweetest tenor voices to come out of Jamaica, where he was born in 1956. His style melds roots reggae with dancehall in his songs bursting with spiritually uplifting themes, spread over a series of heralded CDs from 1994’s “Lift Up Your Head” to the 2007 “Live in Berkeley.” In addition to being a singing star and composer/arranger, as a producer Blender has worked with fellow reggae artists Prezident Brown, Richie Spice, Anthony B, Jah Mason, and Admiral Tibet, among others. www.evertonblender.net On this tour Blender is again backed by St. Lous’ deep groove Yard Squad Band, with guitarist P.J. Herrington, Dane Cole and Matt Jacobs on keyboards, bassist Art Richards, and drummer Thomas Fowler. The band was formed in 1994 and has been busy on its own and backing some of reggae’s biggest names in national tours. www.myspace.com/yardsquad Reggae singer Triniti, born Amha Selassie Baraka, grew up in his minister father’s Southern Baptist Church in Washington, D.C., where he began singing in the choir at the age of 4. Later he made his stage debut at the first annual D.C. Reggae Festival. In 1992 Baraka formed his first band dedicated to Rastafarian message, Jah Kuumba. The band went on to back the Itals, as well as Selassie. Meanwhile, he became a well-known performer with such CDs as “For the Love Of Jah” and “Strictly Roots,” performing throughout the West Coast and Hawaii, where he now lives and takes his message of Jah Love around the world. He celebrated his 51st birthday at Ashkenaz in January with a salute to the Maroon Day anniversary. www.facebook.com/amha.baraka Ital Souls return to Ashkenaz, this time backing vocalist Sky-I.
