VERY JERRY III: IT ALL ROLLS INTO ONE

This third annual Ashkenaz celebration of Jerry Garcia’s birthday features a one-time-only, all-star Bay Area cast of players from David Gans and Sycamore Slough String Band to David Nelson (of New Riders of the Purple Sage) to the Waybacks’ James Nash and guitar wizard Henry Kaiser. Jerome John Garcia would have turned 71 on August 1. Although his body is gone, Jerry Garcia’s spirit and music have never been more alive. That spirit is the heart of the “Very Jerry III, It All Rolls Into One.” The night celebrates Garcia the composer and performer, as soloists, duos and bands perform separately and in kaleidoscopic combinations, acoustic and electric, and both at once, in this community benefit for Ashkenaz Music and Dance Community Center. The evening mixes Garcia-oriented songs as well as extended jams on favorite Garcia compositions that could include “St. Stephen,” “Black Muddy River,” “Doing that Rag,” and extended jams into such realms as “The Wheel” and “Dark Star,” the musicians pushing into new directions and heightened, full-on dancer-friendly rhythms. In addition to Gans, SSSB, Nash and Kaiser, musicians will include (solo and in various combinations) fast-rising singer-guitarist-violinist Jason Crosby (who has worked with everyone from Bob Weir and Phil Lesh to Susan Tedeschi and Carlos Santana), singer-guitarist Jeff Pehrson (of Furthur and the Fall Risk) with Fall Risk bandmates, singer Jenny Kerr (slide guitar, banjo) and Phil Milner (guitarist and Ratdog tech), and Joe Burke. Plus the house band with Eddie Berman, Steve Kirk, Dave Jess and J Raoul Brody. Although Jerry Garcia never played at Ashkenaz, he has a long history with the venue. Since the ’90s Ashkenaz has hosted Grateful Dead Nights, and has featured a plethora of musicians who worked with him over the decades, as well as bands that pay homage to the music of Jerry Garcia, the Grateful Dead, and scores of acts who follow in their footsteps musically and ideologically.
