“A dynamic force within the style” [of slack key]”… “dazzling” – The New York Times "He's lean, young, expressive, with impressive stage presence and jewel box precision… He is a master, for certain, but blessed with sizzling showmanship." -- Honolulu Advertiser “Charting a new sonic frontier with deep ties to tradition” -- National Geographic Society Virtuosic and versatile, Makana defies description. His solo performance is an exhilarating ride through the breadth of slack key, folk, rock, bluegrass, ethnic and jazz and his distinctly original songs are infused with the spirit of Hawai‘i. From the 200-year old slack key tradition, rooted in a very personal folk music expression of beautiful surroundings and Hawaiian way of life, Makana has evolved his own dynamic, high-octane style, coined “Slack Rock,” or slack key infused with elements of bluegrass, rock, blues and raga. Praise for Makana comes from many unexpected sources including Kirk Hammett, lead guitarist for Metallica and Spanish Flamenco master Pepe Romero. In 2008, he was among the top 3 winners in Guitar Player Magazine's 2008 National Guitar Superstar Competition, and in 2012, he was featured on the soundtrack of the George Clooney movie The Descendants. Makana's original songs are distinctly his own, yet infused with the spirit of Hawai'i. His songs range from traditional to highly original, both instrumental and lyrical, exploring a broad spectrum of themes: cultural, philosophical, social-political, economic, inter-personal, sensual, and universal, often through the lens of humor and a piercing wit. In 2012, he was recognized with a Na Hoku (Hawai‘i’s “Grammy”): Ki-Ho‘alu (Slack Key) Foundation Legacy Award, in recognition of his work in the field of slack key guitar, and the soundtrack of the award-winning film The Descendants was nominated for a Grammy©. Makana’s growing world of fans, of all ages, all backgrounds, have discovered the thrill of his performances: amazing guitar, heartfelt songs, and impassioned playing.
