From late night jam sessions with Parisian bebop ensembles to celebrated tenures with both Frank Zappa and Mahavishnu Orchestra, Jean Luc Ponty has endured as one of the premiere names in jazz violin. Early experience playing clarinet and tenor saxophone deeply imprinted his horn-like tone and phrasing. A pioneer of style as well as technique, Ponty was among the first jazz artists to use an electric violin, and probably the first to shape its sound with digital and analog effects. Dozens of releases as bandleader and as many guest appearances comprise his catalog of recorded works.
