Gotye Got Me, album review: Tue 1/20/2009 7:56PM; Gotye's latest album, Like Drawing Blood, fell into my hands a few days ago and I've been listening to it nonstop. Not necessarily because it's mindblowingly amazing, but because somehow, someway, between my 1st and 3rd listen, it acquired an undeniable hold on me. "Heart's A Mess" is a truly haunting and sexy song that lingers in your ears and mouth long after hearing it. The video is a perfect compliment to the song, an almost Tim Burton like journey definitely worth watching. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_CM5-gel6o.

Other interesting and completely different sounding songs on this album include "Coming Back," a salsa/latin infused song that draws you in seductively upon first listen and holds you in that space right until the end. "Thanks For Your Time" could be the catchiest tune on the album, very reminiscent of Phil Collins or Peter Gabriel, someone from the synthesizer friendly 80s. A definite bob-your-head-up-and-down-because-you-feel-instantly-cooler-upon-listening type of song. Then, Rolling Stone's 94th best song of the year, "Learnalilgivenanlovin" which is a complete throwback to Stevie Wonder, so poppy and uplifting. It could be the end scene in a Ghostbusters type movie, good finally triumphed over evil, something of this nature. Finally, another completely different sounding song is "The Only Thing I Know." This reminds me of how Muse's "Map of the Problematique" makes me feel: naughty. Up to no good. Rotten. Great lyrics, great melody, great rhythm, a great drive to it.

All of this diversity and greatness is really impressive coming from one person. Wally de Backer, from Australia, literally plays every instrument you hear and according to his website, simply "makes music in his bedroom". I can't wait to hear more from this guy. Gotye, I'm a fan.
