BRIAN FELIX [keys, OM Trio]
JASON CONCEPCION [guitar, SCHA]
DAN FEISZLI [bass, Axis]
ALAN HERTZ [drums, Garaj Mahal]
A
unique San Francisco ensemble, featuring members of OM Trio,
Santa Cruz Hemp Allstars, Garaj Mahal and Axis!
SF's funky, hi-energy groove specialists are getting together
for one night, throwin' down a jazz electronica dance groove that
will have your booty shakin'.
Based
in the San Francisco/Bay Area, OM Trio has brought its
unique electric jazz to countless venues across the country through
relentless touring. This trio is quickly gathering a national
following, and for good reason. They are true musicians, creating
improvisational based compositions with heavy chops, a sense of
humor, and a funky deep bottom end. This a band to keep your eyes
on as they continue to gather momentum and reach new heights with
their instrumental explorations.
Jason
Concepcion, of the Santa Cruz Hemp Allstars and formerly
of netwerk: electric, is a respected guitar phenom whose
jazz fusion and space funk style is loved by eager fans across
the West Coast. With Jason shredding on guitar, netwerk: electric
created a unique sound blending tripped-out funk, jazz and jungle,
hip hop and bebop, gospel and groove, and even samba and soul.
Axis
is an East Bay power trio skilled in the art of air compression
and subliminal mainstream detox. Through fearless dedication they
are building an extensive following of ravenous beer drinkers,
twirling dread-heads, and spiritually-minded truth-seekers. Whether
you're into music as a product to boost the economy, or as a source
of infinite perfection, you'll find a way to fit Axis into a box
of your liking.

Hot Buttered Rum String Band
In
the summer of 1999, the Hot Buttered Rum String and headed for Californias
Sierra Nevada mountains in search of the high lonesome sound of
mountain music. After a month of hiking, climbing, pickin
& singin, HBRSB brought back a new sound: High Altitude
Bluegrass.
Relix
Magazines On the Verge section (June 2003) praised
HBRSBs stunning
instrumental and vocal virtuosity. As Swallow Hill Music Association
producer Grant
Landsbach describes: "The Hot Buttered Rum String Band is quickly
establishing itself as one of the finest young bluegrass bands around."
The
Hot Buttered Rum String Bands music nods to the past and sits
squarely in the
present. The music appeals to traditional bluegrass aficionados
as well as the most discerning folk audiences and dance-hungry jam-band
fans. HBRSB thrives in both quiet concert settings as well as wild
dance halls. A truly multi-generational audience is growing around
this group of musicians who deliver a fresh sound grounded in tradition.

Marco
Benevento & Joe Russo Duo

The
dynamic duo of the NYC jazz groove has arrived. Marco Benevento
(Hammond B3 organ) & Joe Russo (drums) are taking the
music world by storm. Since the debut of their self-titled album
in April of 2002, this high energy duo continue to make a tremendous
impact on musicians and fans alike.
The
duo came to rise during a marathon residency at the Knitting Factory
in NYC from January to October 2002. Critics and fans herald the
"hard and abrasive drum & bass, smooth organ boogaloo groove,
and back in the cut funky breaking sound," earning them a reputation
as being one of the best live acts in NYC. Week after week their
ability to relate with their fans and to push the limits of their
sound has seen a tremendous increase in their audience, in tandem
with the respect of top musicians.
On
Friday, July 18th at the Boom Boom Room, Marco and
Joe will be joined guitarist Will Bernard. A long time Bay
Area musician, guitarist/composer Will Bernard first came to prominence
through his membership in Peter Apfelbaum's Hieroglyphics Ensemble,
whose first record appeared in 1990. Since then he has been involved
with a host of boundary stretching groups, ranging from jazz, hip
hop and world music to experimental music, with many stops in between.
He has performed and recorded with Jai Uttal and the Pagan Love
Orchestra, Peter Apfelbaum's various band incarnations, Beth Custer,
The Coup, and Midnight Voices to name a few. The most successful
of these projects was the group T.J. Kirk (with Charlie Hunter)
whose 2nd record for Warner Bros. If Four Was One was nominated
for a Grammy in 1997. Will released his debut CD as a leader, Medicine
Hat, in 1998 on Verve/Antilles. He has since been rocking with
his band Motherbug as well as sitting in with various groups over
the last few years.
Cannonball is also joining in on this evening with DJ Zeph to make
for an explosive combination of Soul Jazz, Fusion and Funk!

Steppin'
featuring
OSCAR MYERS - trumpet and percussion
WIL BLADES - Hammond B-3 organ
CHARLES THOMAS - bass guitar and vocals
STEVE BURKE - guitar
BRANDON E. - drums
BRAD HUGHES - sax
Steppin'
is a new-groove, old-school dirty soul collective that combines
the warmth of jazz-blues melody with the uptempo, polysyncopated
rhythms of hip-hop. Led by Oscar Myers, Steppin' is evolving to
a higher plane of groove. Their music is an elated boogie that's
just beginning to surface in the San Francisco music scene.
Oscar
Myers - trumpet and percussion
Born
in Montego Bay, Jamaica, Bay Area living legend Oscar Myers has
been blowin' his horn to audiences for more than 30 years! He has
performed and recorded with some of the most influential figures
in R&B, jazz, blues, pop and funk including Ray Charles, John
Lee Hooker, Charles Mingus, Ike Turner, Bill Summers and Pharaoh
Sanders. Heavily influenced by other trumpet greats such as Miles
Davis, Lee Morgan and Donald Byrd, Oscar has succeeded in creating
his own unique voice on the instrument. Equally proficient in writing
as playing, Oscar is also responsible for the funky horn arrangements
that set the groovers smiling, and that would make the Memphis Horns
and JBs proud. Oscar Myers is a bad cat... and he can dance, too.
Man, can he dance!
Wil
Blades - Hammond B-3 organ
Originally
from Chicago, Wil Blades has become one of San Francisco's top organists.
He has been wowing audiences with Bay Area groups Aquatic Groove
Session, O.G.D. and BluesBeat. Wil has also shared the stage with
artists such as John Lee Hooker, Parliament, Eddie Marshall and
Herbie Lewis. Wil's slammin', rhythmic, blues-driven style is reminiscent
of Jimmy Smith, Dr. Lonnie Smith and "Groove Holmes,"
but he also stays in touch with contemporary sounds. His playing
has gained him respect from audiences and musicians alike.
Charles
Thomas - bass guitar and vocals
Native
San Franciscan Charles Thomas has been backing up the best of them
for many years. He has played and toured with Les McCann, Joe Henderson,
Billy Paul, Lenny Williams (Tower of Power) and the 5th Dimension.
His soulful voice and relentless funky bass bring you back to when
Sly & The Family Stone and Parliament Funkadelic were originally
pumping though the radio. Charles gives you a groove that's guaranteed
to make you get up and shake it.
Steve
Burke - guitar
East
Coast born and raised, guitarist Steve Burke has been playing his
greasy R&B juke-joint jazz style to appreciative West Coast
audiences for the past several years. Steve was the founding member
of Tripek Recording artists Tom Dick and Harry, and is currently
a member of the San Francisco based soul-jazz band The Project.
He blends a healthy mix of finger-lickin' funk and sweet-natured
soul to his guitar style and plays a dirty, funky guitar in the
tradition of Grant Green, George Benson, Melvin Sparks and Ivan
"Boogaloo Joe" Jones.
Brandon
E. - drums
San Francisco's own Brandon E. is one of the most sought-after jazz/funk
and R&B drummers in the Bay Area. His feel and spirit are reminiscent
of those legendary drummers who have created and shaped the music
we call funk. Drawing on influences such as Idris Muhammad, Bernard
"Pretty" Purdie, Clyde Stubblefield, Bill Stewart, Jack
DeJohnette, Stanton Moore and Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste,
Brandon has forged a unique and syncopated yet melodic style of
drumming.

Raw
Deluxe
Opening for Steppin' on Saturday, July 19th
Whether
Raw Deluxe is in its free-flowing improvisational mode or
working through the sweaty structures of its awe-inspiring catalog,
the quintet is always a sure bet for a good time. With a musical
history that stretches back to the Bay Area's late-'90s acid jazz
and hip hop scene, the band has spent almost five years building
a reputation for expert guitar work, energetic horns, and propulsive
organ grooves. Comprised of Chris Spano on drums, Chris
Arenas on bass, Matt Fleming on the electric piano and
organ, Tony Jurado on sax, and Jason Collins on guitar,
Raw Deluxe released its acclaimed debut EP, Back to the Jungle,
in 2001. XLR8R magazine promptly hailed the effort as "killer
jazz-funk," and the band reeled in a host of awards that year.
The six-song disc -- especially the awesome single "Get Some"
-- whetted the appetites of many funk fans. Raw Deluxe intends to
deliver its bootylicious follow-up sometime in 2003, after the group
comes back from its current West Coast tour. Of course, the group
may never return: Like true road warriors, Raw Deluxe has been gigging
nonstop in support of Back to the Jungle. For this
boombastically fun live band, the stage is a home away from home,
especially when the ensemble's playing with such popular acts as
Marginal Prophets, Boomshanka, Mission:, and the Breakestra. Wherever
Raw Deluxe is, it can always be counted on to cook up a savory mix
of danceable tunes. If you like your funk steaming, try it Raw.
