New
Orleans-based music promoter Superfly
Productions is proud to announce its 7th annual "Superfly
during JazzFest" concert series. These special events will take
place from Friday, April 25 through Sunday, May 4 at several venues
throughout New Orleans, including the State
Palace Theatre, the Saenger
Theatre, the Orpheum
Theater, the Maple
Leaf, The
Riverboat Cajun Queen, and brand new entertainment complex
Twi-Ro-Pa.
Confirmed shows are listed below, with additional shows to be announced
soon.
The
2003 Superfly during JazzFest concert series presents a colorful
cross-section of styles and set-ups. The schedule features esteemed
veterans like the funky
Meters and Bela
Fleck and the Flecktones (both performing at the intimate
Orpheum Theatre), and fresh acts like neo-bluegrass outfit Yonder
Mountain String Band and steel guitar prodigy Robert
Randolph & the Family Band. The series also brings to
town perennially outrageous rock band Ween,
supported by a rare performance from Colonel
Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains. Led by bass giant
Les
Claypool (Primus, Oysterhead), Bucket of Bernie Brains
is an all-star funk-rock conglomerate featuring enigmatic guitar
innovator Buckethead
(currently of Guns 'n' Roses), P-Funk keyboardist Bernie
Worrell, and drum wizard Brain. The latter three, fellow
members of critically acclaimed metal/electronic project Praxis,
assembled with Claypool for their inaugural performance at Superfly's
first annual Bonnaroo
Music Festival last June. With Ween's irreverent
lyrics and rhapsodic songbook and unencumbered heavy rock exploration
by Colonel Claypool and crew, the show is sure to be a series pinnacle.
Other highlights include Galactic
co-headlining with Jack
Johnson for the second straight year, and special riverboat
shows with hometown roots rockers the Radiators
and progressive bluegrass multi-instrumentalist Keller
Williams.
Along with the usual club and theater venues, this year, Superfly
will utilize Twi-Ro-Pa
for programming during JazzFest. Located on Tchoupitoulas Street
in New Orleans' famed Warehouse District, Twi-Ro-Pa is an historic
industrial complex, recently converted into a full-scale arts and
entertainment venue. Completely upgraded and embellished with artistic
amenities, Twi-Ro-Pa is one of the hippest music venues in the city.
Its multi-modular setup allows simultaneous performances at the
same location. The
Dirty Dozen Brass Band will take the venue's Tchoupitoulas
Room for an 11-night residency, while national headliners
will play the larger Twi-Ro-Pa Live room. Once again, the Superfly
during JazzFest concert series will dominate the season's late night
activity with a host of acts appearing into the early morning at
Twi-Ro-Pa and other club venues.
As always, in addition to scheduled acts, the series' multi-venue
format will promote special collaborations and surprise sit-ins
in a freewheeling, creative atmosphere where the musical possibilities
are limitless. With such a wide variety of artists participating,
and the support of an audience that thrives on spontaneity, each
performance at the Superfly during JazzFest concert series is a
unique experience.
The Superfly during JazzFest concert series began in 1997 to fulfill
an intense demand for nighttime music events during the New Orleans
Jazz and Heritage Festival. Since then, the event has grown rapidly
to become a premier destination for serious music fans from all
over the country. Spanning eleven days, several venues, and dozens
of performances, the Superfly series caters to the exploding grassroots
rock fan base, a group of passionate live music lovers who favor
improvisation-based acts of all sorts.
