In 2009, JamBase attempted to embrace live music of nearly every stripe, and while we got to a lot of the good stuff out there, we're all too aware that there's plenty more to be discovered. This is why JamBase keeps its virtual doors open to our readers, providing you with the ability to contribute work and comment on what we publish, as well as engage your fellow readers in what can be, uh, lively discussions. But, we also offer Community Resources, where you can connect with others and express yourself in Fan Journals. One of the things we love about live music is how it draws us out of our MP3 soundtracked perfect isolation and gets us to bump molecules with the rest of the universe. It's a rare moment, if we're lucky, when all the extraneous worry and responsibility fade and we're truly present, directly engaged with creation. And we're never there alone. We're glad we're in this WITH you. Here's to a bright and deliciously musical new year for us all!

ArSeaEm Inc: Jerry Fine Art
"In Chair" is one of a series of five oil paintings created by
Jerry Garcia as part of his training at the San Francisco Art
Institute in the late 1950s, studying under Elmer Bischoff,
one of the Masters of the Bay Area Figurative Art period (1950-1964).
Though his visual art impulse was overtaken by his later
musical career, Garcia produced drawings and cartoons
throughout his life. The oil paintings and his study with
Bischoff, offer a clue to the well springs of Garcia’s later
computer graphic work, and to the tension between abstract
and figurative expression present in his whole creative output. Check it out! |

Steve Dawson
There was a time when popular radio was defined by the craftsmanship and raw talent of folks like Al Green, Paul McCartney and Carole King. Steve Dawson would have fit in just fine. As part of Chicago's criminally under-known Dolly Varden he's churned out nothing but quality for 15 years, but his second solo outing, I Will Miss The Trumpets & The Drums carries the timeless inflection of vintage Roy Orbison and George Harrison. Personal, philosophical, and subtly orchestrated, Dawson's tunes sway with whispers of pedal steel, finely placed echo, and a tasty acoustic/electric guitar combo, all underpinning one of the great pop-rock voices of our time, a set of pipes both instantly appealing and flecked with warm, individual character. Think Ace-era Paul Carrack mixed with Elliott Smith and Big Star's Chris Bell. Put into service for compositions packed with melody, texture and winning wordplay and you have a classic artist hiding in plain sight. Listen! |
