JamBase Monthly Newsletter- Go See Live Music

"The sun is shining, the weather is sweet/ Make you wanna move your dancin feet." Bob Marleys pronouncement encapsulates the dog days of summer, where music fests abound. Just recently weve chronicled the inaugural Wanderlust Festival and Lollapalooza, as well as Phish's celebrated runs at The Gorge and Red Rocks (keep track of our uber-coverage at jambase.com/phish), all of these events highlighted by the epic surroundings and wide open skies. When we move past walls and roofs, eyes turned skyward for perhaps the first time in ages, we may find ourselves opened up to newness and ready to re-embrace old loves; lungs swelling, toes sinking in the grass, touching earth and able to sing anew. Enjoy what remains of the season, and well be out there capturing as much of it as we can!

The Low Anthem
artist photo
"To Ohio" is one of the saddest, most beautiful songs you will hear all year. The second track on The Low Anthems incredible album Oh My God, Charlie Darwin (originally self-released in 2008 and re-released June 9, 2009 on Nonesuch); its the story of a man who "lost my love before her time... on the way to Ohio... Every new love is just a shadow... on the way to Ohio." Sung with the slow, hushed weight of death, the words are carried to our ears on angel wings of restrained chamber folk orchestration (in addition to regular fare the trio utilizes a restored WWI pump organ, banjo, clarinet, trombone, harmonica, crotales and much more). Only a band since 2006, the depth of songwriting and ability to cross the dusty Americana landscape from such burdened acoustic folk songs like "To Ohio" to country barnburners, delicate three-part harmonies dripping with reverb, a Tom Waits cover, and soul-saving gospel without loosing continuity makes The Low Anthem worthy of all the hype they are sure to receive.
