JamBase Monthly Newsletter- Go See Live Music

Bonnaroo and Rothbury are behind us (and documented in bright colors and spirited prose on JamBase!) but there's still a lot of sunshine, long days and great music set to unfold this summer. While marquee festivals present jaw-dropping assemblages smaller fests can't begin to approach, more intimate gatherings often bring with them a sincere passion and winning vibe that the big events can't reproduce. One of our driving inspirations at JamBase is presenting music lovers with the tools and info they need, and at the top of our homepage is a small button labeled "Festivals". Give it a click and you'll discover hundreds of cool options, many of them situated in some of the most beautiful, unique settings America has to offer. And there's nothing like a road trip into the fabulous unknown, eh?

Right around the corner there's the Finger Lakes GrassRoots Fest in central New York (7/16-7/19) or that same weekend the Summer Music Festival at Roseberry in Idaho or Targhee Fest in Wyoming. In August you might hit Summer Meltdown (8/13 – 8/16) near Seattle or the electronica rich Nelson Ledges Summerdance (8/28 – 8/30) in Ohio. Point is, much as we love you spending your computer time with us, there's a world of sounds and experiences out there and we're happy to keep you up to speed.

Megafaun
artist photo
Comfortingly inviting yet inquisitively alien, Durham, NC's Megafaun pull off the tough trick of being instantly appealing while pulling plush rabbits out of their hat. "We have an all-inclusive, listener-sensitive, tradition-hungry, innovative and genuine practice of improvisation," says drummer Joe Westerlund. Having collaborated with Akron/Family and Justin Vernon, Megafaun fully blossoms on their sophomore album, Gather, Form & Fly (out July 21 on Hometapes), a tour de force of switched-on, no borders music that you can do strange, happy animals dances to. Citing influences as diverse as The Band and Anthony Braxton, multi-instrumentalist Brad Cook says, "We are attracted to people who are always searching and always honest. That's the core aesthetic we are drawn to." Capable of exploratory wildness, Megafaun also sculpts fabulously lingering ditties (Gather's "The Fade" is a perfect summer single), and like kindred ancestors MMJ and The Slip there's an underlying certainty that all things are possible in this band. Give them a listen on MySpace.

Omar Rodriguez Lopez: Genius Set Free
Ben HarperThere will come a time, many many years from now, long after the dust has settled, when we look back at this point in music's vast history, and Omar Rodriguez Lopez will be left standing. There will be others for sure – luminaries like Jack White, Prince, Trent Reznor, Eddie Vedder, OutKast, obviously Radiohead, probably Trey, Jim James, Jeff Tweedy, perhaps Patterson Hood and certainly many more, but none are as prolific as Omar… More
