JamBase Monthly Newsletter- Go See Live Music

There's no denying the buzz in live music circles as Phish returns to summer stages (be sure to keep an eye on our Phish Tour Page for live setlists, pics, reviews and more, as well as our new Bonnaroo Page to connect with the fest action). Besides their own sweet reemergence, Phish have folks watching setlists and jabbering about live music in general. There is a concert loving community that goes beyond any one group, any one scene, any one festival, and Phish are themselves the children of this subculture, which readily weathers the muck of rainy fields and slick amphitheatres to revel in the unfolding moment.

JamBase's slogan - "Go See Live Music!" - is a succinct bit of philosophical incitement. We believe live music, in all its myriad permutations, can affect people's lives in a very positive way. There's an openness to chance and a focus on the "now" at shows that doesn't happen in our living room. As one of the pillars of our scene stands tall again, it's also primetime to appreciate live music in broader ways. Time to discover a new band or two. Time to put away our phones and listen to what the players are playing while sharing fellowship with likeminded strangers. We'll keep sharing as much of the good stuff as we can find. Now you go out and get your hand stamped and maybe buy the drummer a beer, alright?

Ha Ha Tonka

Age often has nothin' to do with wisdom. Ha Ha Tonka seem wise beyond their years. With feet to the fire and one blind eye, they divine rough, chunky truths on their sophomore album, Novel Sounds of the Nouveau South (out June 16 on Bloodshot), letting churchy harmonies and bad boy rock attitude commingle around the holy water they've collected. Ha Ha Tonka take the rudimentary things of great roots music – the full bodied feel of The Band, a splash of Tom Petty's widescreen storytelling, the graceful arcs of Wilco – and inject them with young man hunger and back-to-basics bar band aesthetics. That they meld such a pleasurably earthy sound to a record inspired by a piece of classic Ozark literature, Harold Bell Wright's The Shepherd of the Hills, written in 1907 is even more impressive. Ha Ha Tonka elevates the level of discourse while keeping an essential air guitar sparking, speaker-rattling, untamed quality fully intact. That they also offer up their hearts right at the end of their sleeves just seals the deal. Give them a listen on MySpace.
