JamBase Monthly Newsletter- Go See Live Music

“The times they are a-changin’.” Leave it to Dylan. If you want to sum up a time, a place, an emotion – any time, place or emotion - Bob Dylan is the man for the job. The times are changing. As of this week, we’ve got a new President and with him we’ve got a new vision. Fear and Shame are being packed up and replaced with Hope and Change. We believe in the power of music and as this world continues to change, we’re out there searching for new sounds to fill your soul. That’s why if you look at JamBase this month you’ll see features on Animal Collective, one of the most innovating, exciting bands on the scene, Jessica Lea Mayfield, a young teenage singer-songwriter bound for the big time, as well as Toubab Krewe, The Rosebuds, Umphrey’s McGee and our 2008 Band of The Year: My Morning Jacket. All of these acts bring something new to the conversation. And it’s our belief that with a little help from a leader we believe in, all this new music will allow us to find our way in these ever-changing times. With eyes forward and ears open we’re moving towards the light, get on board!

BLK JKS
artist photo
You will soon be hearing much more from BLK JKS. Rising from the streets of Johannesburg, South Africa, they’ve been called “dub-metal,” “Afro-punk,” “post-Afrobeat” and you might be able to consider them some sort of slammed together amalgamation of TV on the Radio, Yeasayer, Liquid Liquid and Fela. But those are just boxes for writers and publicists to wrap up ideas beyond our normal lexicon. Like anything genuinely new and groundbreaking, there are no easy words to describe BLK JKS. You’d be far better served to just light one up and let the shifting silver beats, huge guitars, minor chord drones, and psychedelic bombast wash across your dome. After a chance meeting with super-producer Diplo in Africa, BLK JKS came to the U.S. in 2008 for a string of shows. The massive success led to a recording session at NYC’s Electric Lady studios. Produced by The Secret Machines’ Brandon Curtis, who came to the band as a fan, the MYSTERY EP will be released on March 10 through Secretly Canadian. Get a taste of what’s to come on MySpace.
