NFL Films Prepping Feature On Phish And Russell Wilson

NFL Films is currently in production on a feature about the relationship between Phish and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. Producer Chris Weaver, a longtime Phish fan, shared the news this morning via Twitter, along with a few images from the shoot.

As a refresher, this all started back in April when Phish front man Trey Anastasio told a crowd at a TAB show in Seattle about his plan to get Seahawks fans to chant "Wilson" as the quarterback walks on the field. Then, when Phish played The Gorge in July, Trey donned a Seahawks t-shirt bearing Wilson's name and number before reminding the audience of his grand plan. The band's plan has succeeded.

Weaver shared details about the feature on Phantasy Tour:

I'm currently co-producing and directing a piece for the series NFL Films Presents about Phish and the Seahawks, as it relates to Trey's requests in Seattle and at the Gorge for Seahawks fans to do the Wiiiiil-sooooon chant when Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson takes the field at home games.

While Phish was wrapping up the Fall tour in Atlantic City, the band and Red Light Management provided us with outstanding access: I interviewed Trey and Fish, we did some backstage filming, and we shot virtually the entire 11/2/13 concert.

Our next set of shoots is in Seattle this weekend, and at the Seahawks game this Monday Night. If you, or if you know of a group of Phish fans who will be at the game on Monday, please let me know below.

We don't have exact air-dates yet, but will air sometime in January on ESPN and NFL Network. I will try to update this thread as soon as I have more info. In the meantime, you can follow me (@Weaver_NFLF) and NFL Films (@NFLFilms) on twitter for any other updates.

UPDATE 11/30 7 a.m. PT: NFL Films has shared a blog post with the latest on the feature. They plan to film at Monday night's Seahawks game and the post advises fans on when the "Wilson" chant will take place:

In the last 48 hours we’ve received many inquiries about our NFL Films shoot at the Seahawks game Monday night, where we’ll have a crew dedictated to gathering elements for our forthcoming feature “WILLL-SONN!”. Here’s the latest on what we’re aiming to capture for the story of the song in which Phish and the Seahawks collide:

Throughout the 2013 season, the Seahawks in-game jumbotron and music presentation has included the opening guitar riff from Phish’s song “Wilson”, along with video board graphics that spell out the song title in giant, flashing parts: “WIL” then “SON”. When the riff is played — in honor of Seattle starting quarterback Russell Wilson — the Century Link Field crowd has taken to responding with the same “Wiiiiiil-soooooon” chant that takes place at Phish shows.

The Seahawks have two scheduled Wilson “riffs” during each game:

1) When Russell Wilson goes from the sideline to the huddle for the Seahawks first offensive series of the game.

2) When Russell goes to the huddle for the first offensive series of the 3rd quarter.

In addition, the video board producers will sometimes play spontaneous Wilson riffs before other Seahawks offensive series’ throughout the game. So whenever Russell is heading to the huddle, keep your ears open for Trey’s “duh-duh, duh-duh” and keep your eye on the jumbo-tron so you can crank out your best “Wiiiiil-sooooon!” chant … Our camera may just be pointed at you as it rolls to gather as many Wilson chants as possible.

Who’s pumped for Monday night?

UPDATE 12/2: It's Monday night and everything went according to plan as fans joined in the "Wilson" chant. Monday Night Football announcer Mike Tirico of ESPN even explained the Phish/Seahawks connection. Watch:
