Although the Du Nord is known for the quality of musical acts it presents, the nightclub retains the ambiance of the classic speakeasy it once was. Its 1907 Victorian interiors, original faux decorated wainscoting and forty-foot copper-faced mahogany bar create the perfect environment to enjoy classic cocktails, great food and some of the most best live music in town.
The Café Du Nord is not only one of the hottest live music venues in town — it is "one of San Francisco's hippest watering holes" according to SOMA Magazine. Or, as Rolling Stone Magazine puts it, "located in a former speak-easy, this dark-wooded, subterranean watering hole is the perfect place to lose a few decades over a batch of martinis." Stepping down into the lush Victorian ambiance is like stepping back into time. It is easy to visualize your boss, wife and friends having a grand ol' time in the best of Barbary Coast traditions. Of course, being a former speakeasy, we take pride in providing the ultimate cocktail experience. Come on in for a great drink with no attitude.
Known locally as the "Venue with the Menu," the Du Nord provides a full dinner menu and classic bar food until 11:00 p.m each night that we have a show as well as an extensive catering menu for our private event clients. All restaurant and catering operations for both the Café Du Nord and the Swedish American Hall are managed by the esteemed veteran "Chef Mike" Werden. (Click here to see what the SF Chronicle has to say about our nightclub food).
For every show, we reserve a limited number of seats in our show room for patrons with dinner reservations. However, even without dinner reservations, there is usually plenty of space in our front lounge or at the main bar to sample the best nightclub menu in town. Dinner reservations can be made by calling (415) 861-5016, Monday through Friday, from 2 – 6:00 p.m.
"The bar is in front of this well preserved, underground former speakeasy, but the mob's is deeper into the club, where listeners rock out to an eclectic array of live music…" (7x7 Nightlife Guide). The showroom is where it all comes together! On a small stage, in an intimate setting with great sound, the Café Du Nord has presented literally thousands of local, national and international artists. Virtually every discipline in the lively arts spectrum has performed at the Du Nord including spoken word, burlesque, performance art, cabaret, chanting Buddhist monks and even a quiz show. However, we are famous world-wide for our music and have featured virtually every imaginable genre from jazz, big band, be-bop, R&B and soul to thrash, experimental and noise, to country, folk, indie, rock and pop to EDM, techno and hip hop.
Café Du Nord is generally open one hour before show time. Please visit our calendar page for show times. We typically close at 2:00 a.m. — sometimes earlier depending on the crowd.
