Got a crispy FOB SBD or Podcast?

i wanna get into recording small shows on a small level, i have no clue what i need to do to get a good sounding recording though. i found the small handheld recorder that i would want to get but i am not sure where i would want to place it duru=ing the show.

where is the best place for a small recorder like that? do i have to find a way to prop it up over the crowd or do i just need to get it near a speaker?
