So they opened the tour at summerfest two nights ago. I've never seen Ratdog with MK before, and my heart goes out to him--however, I was very happy to see Weir and Kimock on the same stage. I don't think Kimock blew my mind much, but I don't know the lead guitar style Ratdog prefers.
Anyone out there anal enough to bitch about Kimock's performance? I was five rows from Bobby and thought it was a great show, though those low points almost caused me to fall face first into the benches. Also, Ratdog's drummer sucks.

Ratdog's drummer sucks?!?!?!?! Jay Lane is the best in the buisness! Maybe he had an off night but I've seen him take drum solos that have lifted me off the floor (Specifically a drum solo he took during Terrapin at the e-factory last year). Also check out the stuff he recorded w/ Les Claypool (Flying Frog Brigade or Sausage).
I've seen Ratdog a bunch and I will admint that every so often they disappoint. Either they lack energy or I'm not happy with the song selection but most of the time they put on a great show.
I'm curious what didn't you like about Jay Lane's playing?

In all honesty, Jay Lane was just really boring. He just stuck with very simple beats any professional drummer could play, like that chick from the white stripes.
Also, he didn't take a single solo, kinda wished he did. And I did not know he was the same drummer from Claypool's Frog Brigade, which is pretty telling that he must have had an off night, because his stuff with Les is damn creative.

Kimock is very much more preferable to Karan.
I hope Karan gets well, but Kimock is superior.
I want to see RD just because of Kimock.
I may be blind, but I do not see any posting here about Jay Lane sucking? oh well. :P

Railroad: I hear you man. I would be greatly disappointed if I saw him laying back all night too.
Miles: What would you consider Kimock's best work? I like him but I don't own any of his recordings.

Live from the east coast and live from the west coast, those two are good starters, and live from the gothic theater DVD. :)

Are they both from Steve Kimock Band? I saw parts of the DVD I think. Does Reed Mathis (bass player from JFJO) play on that DVD? If so then I saw some of that on Concert TV.
Would you say that SKB stuff is better than what he did with Zero?
I hear a lot of people rave about Kimock but what I've heard isn't overly impressive. When that happens that usually means I haven't heard the right album or show from that artist yet.

yes both from SKB. and on the dvd is alphonso johnson on bass..
I like the SKB more than zero, because its instrumental, I prefer instrumentals..
however zero did some too, and SKB does some of those same songs. (instrumentals) like tangled hangars<<<< good zero song and skb song..
if u sit down and watch the DVD closely and his playing, you will understand then.
He is quite a wizard.. however, he is more often than not MELLOW, and the tunes sometimes build up over the course of many minutes.
You must have patience to understand Kimock, because he plays with just that.
he doesnt just RIP you apart, he builds gradually.
its patient music. Ive seen him twice, and one show was hotter than the other.

Thanks for the info Miles! I don't know what it was that I saw On Demand but I'me pretty sure he did a DVD w/ Reed Mathis in his band. I remember the drummer being a young dude with dreads (maybe the drummer from Soulive?). I liked what I saw but it was only a ten minute snipet so it wasn't really enough to whet the appetite.

I'm surprised there has be no mention of KVHW. Definitely my favorite kimock incarnation, the whole band is incredible. Alan Hertz on drums and I can't think of a better bassist to hear with kimock than Bobby Vega. Ray White is great too when he decided to show up. Check out some shows on the Archive, you won't be disappointed. Listen to an It's Up To You. :)
