NC votes to legalize hatred and bigotry

Esuli, I would not count Buddhism as a truly organized religion. It does not have an organizational structure and is more about personal enlightenment. I was talking about religions with strict moral codes and concepts of sin and salvation.

i'd say they are pretty organized. I would say they are more oraganized and on the same page with eachother on most of their beliefs, just like many people of different Christian denominations share beliefs. Their temples serve the same purposes for a community that a church does over here in the United States of Christ.

Yes, but do they hold scheduled church services? Is there an established head of the organization with a hierarchical structure? Are there proscripted sins against God and eternal consequences for those transgressions? I am not an expert on Buddhism, but my understanding of it is that it promotes the idea of the "middle way" to enlightment but not a vision of a separate God entity who sits in judgment and has defined rules and laws that must be obeyed. It is the notion of judgment and rigid structure that leads to bias against gays and other groups that violate "God's laws."

I guess I just don't understand why it seems as though the same people that constantly bash on the intolerance of Christians are also so inviting and accepting of Muslims when they are, by far, more intolerant than these Christians. My only guess would be white guilt and fear of criticizing any group of people that is not white.

You should read the Constitution sometime.

Obama should go ahead and slash any federal funding for NC. All the people that voted for the amendment should be ok with that.

N. Carolina... the watchdogs for protecting the sanctity of marriage. Above average divorce rate. Way to go!

I have no white guilt. Most of my family came here around the 1930s-1950s from Ireland & Poland(thank you 1940 Census) and the ones that have been here longer are from Ireland, and only lived in the north. Not exactly privileged lineage.

It's not so much that they've legalized hatred...they just outlawed acceptance.

The only counties it didn't pass in, all had large universities

education = progressiveness

Poo, I agree with you, but I guess I just do not understand how my comments were biased toward Muslims. I only said that all "moderates" of most religions would be in favor of the NC amendment. Plus, there are many "white" Muslims and non-white Christians. For me, it is not a "guilt" thing at all. I find both religions to be intolerant and divisive at their core.

As far as the comments toward North Carolina, I am as ashamed as anyone of my state, but there are 30 other states with marriage amendments so odds are most people in this forum live in a state with something similar. NC has no monolopy on intolerance.

You just seem more hesitant to call out Muslims than you do Christians.

The law is designed to protect us against wacky religious folks.

I have to be honest. I wasn't even sure where my state stands, I just assumed the worst. Looks like it isn't part of the State Constitution here. There is however a statute banning gay marriage. Indiana can be pretty backward at times...

No, Poo, I actually am an equal opportunity religion opponent. I think that all of them have some positive values, but I do not believe that any of them are anything but man-created myths designed to control people for the benefit of those in power and their negatives far outweigh their positives. I was actually defending your point about an influx of more Muslims (or Catholic Hispanics or any other devoutly religious immigrants) as a bad thing for our society and likely to lead to more amendments like the subject of this thread.

Hoosier, NC already had a law against it like Indiana's. That is what makes the amendment thing even more ridiculous. It was already illegal.
