Looking for real roots? For 39 years the Blue Ridge Folklife Festival has brought together old-time string bands, bluegrass bands, blues singers, ballad singers, gospel singers, rockabilly bands, flat pickers, and flatfooters for a celebration of the Blue Ridge region’s musical heritage. Add to that a host of instrument makers, knife makers, cooks, moonshiners, quilters, leatherworkers, slingshot masters, doll makers, stone masons, sheep herders, log hewers, pulling horses, basket makers, furniture makers, coon dogs, rug braiders, coppersmiths, blacksmiths, hot rodders, stock car racers, weavers, wheat threshers, molasses makers, taletellers, and jumping mules, and you have a folk experience unlike any other. Four performance stages, fifty Blue Ridge craftspeople, working animal contests, kids’ games, two dozen country foods straight from family recipes—the Blue Ridge Folklife Festival is the largest showcase of western Virginia traditions. The New York Times has called it "thoroughly authentic."
