AfroZep's Journal

the creation of afro-zep

Afro-Zep was an idea I had a few years back. My thoughts had been for a while to combine the heavy groove, funk and percussion I love about African music with the melodies and strong vocals of groups I have been listening to since I was a kid.

For the past 7 years I had been playing in and working on getting Chicago Afrobeat Project off the ground. I was really pushing the band to release an all covers album as a way to incorporate the few things that I thought were missing in the band- recognizable melodies and vocals. I left the band about a year ago to focus on getting my life in track. I got engaged, bought a house in Logan Square, Chicago and have positive money coming into my bank account for the first time ever.

I joined several bands after leaving CAbP, one of which is called Ron:the band. Ryan Behling was writing most of the music and singing for Ron. I had mentioned to him the concept of Afro-Zep and he really took to the idea and kept bugging me to get things going. We spoke a bunch about the band before actually working on the music. We had both spent years on the road and agreed to make sure things were never taken too seriously, we always have a good time and we play music because we like playing music and never to look it as a job.

Ron was never able to find a decent guitarist (what is it w guitarists. I feel like when I was a kid everyone played. Now its so rare to find someone that actually understands music and how to be in a band that plays guitar). I had the idea to call an old friend Wilson who plays in one of my favorite Chicago bands- 1000 Vertical Feet.

The 3 of us have spent countless hours hanging out, writing arrangements, drinking lots of Old Style and mixing our favorite Zep tunes first with Fela grooves. Then as we started progressing we added in concepts and techniques of other favorite African musicians, such as Ry-Co Jazz, Franco and Thomas Mapfumo.

We then decided to book 4 or 5 shows and never think beyond that. If it goes
