The Paul Abella Trio: Hand to Bongo combat, #1
Mon 6/8/2009 10:00PM
Well, since there's a blog function on JamBase, I might as well use it, right?

If you've never heard of The Paul Abella Trio, here's our deal:  We started off life as a jazz band, and really, for the most part, we still kind of are one.  But, at some point, we came to the conclusion that all three of us love LOTS of other music.  We also figured that we shouldn't not play that music because we're supposed to be a jazz band.  So, slowly but surely, the music that we love started seeping in.  Bob Ferraris, our outstanding bassist, started sneaking in 60's funk into the playlists with sly quotes of tunes from obscure R&B artists in the middle of tunes.  His knowledge of songs from James Brown, P-Funk, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye and others certainly helped things along too.  Mitch Corso, our phenomenal guitarist, started wearing his love of afrobeat and reggae on his sleeve, as well as a deep appreciation for songwriters like Willie Nelson, Arlo Guthrie, Bob Dylan and Jeff Buckley.  And Paul's love of Afro-Cuban music, as well as the psychedelic rock of Santana, and especially The Grateful Dead rubbed off on the formula as well.  The result is a band that can and does play everything, from the rhythms of Brazil, Puerto Rico and West Africa to the songs of R.E.M. and Johnny Cash.  Of course, there's still liberal doses of Jazz, from Nat King Cole, Charlie Parker or Miles Davis in that stew, and the end result is a band too big for a single existing category.  So, they invented one of their own: Acoustic Fusion.  Fitting for a band that can rip through Return to Forever and Weather Report tunes, and truthful, when referring to a band that plays Dylan tunes like they were written for Fela Kuti.  Of course, since we've all come from jazz backgrounds, we're used to thinking in terms of jobbing and playing constantly.  So, we've got a weekly gig on Chicago's Northwest side at MECCA Supper Club, a twice montly Friday night at Oak Park's Marion Street Cheese Market, and fairly regular appearances at a bunch of other clubs throughout Chicago and the suburbs.  So, the good news is, if this intrigues you, you've got a nearly endless bounty of gigs at which to see us.

So, that's us.  I figured this'd be a good spot to post setlists and fun little tidbits about gigs, hoping that more people will find their way to what we're doing.

And here's as good of a place as any to check out what we're doing...

More soon.  Hope you enjoyed our little chat...
