David the composer's Profile

About me:To make a living, I’m a computer programmer, but my life's passion is music. I’m deep into classical music, but enjoy other types as well. I started piano lessons at age 5 and started composing not too long after that. I started to study music composition at age 13, and went on to major in that subject in college and grad school. I haven’t done much with my piano playing lately, though I’ve been active singing in choral groups, currently with the Renaissance Street Singers. (Check out our Web site at www.streetsingers.org.) True to our name, we specialize in Renaissance music, but occasionally venture into the 20th and 21st centuries, and our members have performed some of my pieces. My one moment in the real public spotlight was on June 13, 1990, when the Florilegium Chamber Choir premiered my composition “A Lyrical Menagerie” at Merkin Hall. Like I said, I also enjoy non-classical music – primarily jazz and rock, occasionally show music and folk. Listening to this music, going to concerts, and watching music videos stimulate my creative impulse. Going to theater, dance, movies and museums also inspire me. I was drawn to computers from an interest, since I was a kid, in math and science. (I minored in math as an undergrad.) As a teenager, I followed project Apollo closely, and ever since have tried to keep up with the latest advances in science and technology, especially computers, physics, and space exploration. These things can also sometimes stimulate my creativity. I have recently completed a Guitar Fantasy, which was performed at a private gathering on 9/15/2007. More recently, I completed, “Music for Recorder, Viols and Voices,” for the ensemble Choraulos. They consist of three viol players and one recorder player, and all four of them also sing. It is still awaiting its first rehearsal.
