Red Rooster's Profile

About me:Red Rooster is led by Jay Erickson (Guitar and Vocals) and Nat Zilkha (Lead Guitar). Friends since kindergarten, Jay & Nat attended college together where they played in several bands before moving to New York together in 1998 to pursue careers in music. Originally established as an acoustic act, playing a mix of original and traditional bluegrass, blues and folk, Red Rooster has evolved into highly original and eclectic band with a sound all its own. Though its roots remain firmly planted in Americana, Red Rooster has created a highly original and urban-infused sound. Today, Red Rooster shows vary from just Jay & Nat with a couple of acoustic guitars, to an urban country orchestra complete with electric guitars, drums, horns, fiddle, mandolin, banjo, a DJ and a choir.

A potent combination of country, blues, folk, rock and hip-hop, Red Rooster's new double-disk release, "Dose," represents the best of American roots music with a distinctly urban twist. The groundbreaking, two-disk format juxtaposes the traditional and the modern to create a unique listening experience. The first disc offers ten new Red Rooster tracks, using every modern tool at the bands' disposal, from amplifiers and distortion pedals to samples and computers. The second disc takes those same exact songs, but strips down the arrangements to only acoustic instruments and natural sounds that could be captured only by a microphone. Exploring alternate melodies, lyrics, and tempos with each varied track, this exciting new album will appeal to both music aficionados tired of the "same old, same old" as well as casual fans looking for a couple CDs of great new music.

Music means to me:Red Rooster's music has evolved significantly over the years. It started out as a very small, very acoustic, very amateur band of friends who thought it would be fun to take the late night sessions (attended by both Mr. Daniels and Mr. Beam) from the living room to the public. We then grew, recorded a first album, the players rotated through and here we are. The new live act consists of a core of the age-old combo of acoustic guitar, electric guitar, drums and bass; sometimes with mandolin, banjo, keys, horns, and/or turntablist (or DJ for those who haven't seen Scratch). The new album (two discs)is a mix of the old and new, the electrified and the acoustic, the computer-clean and the rough-around-the-edges-soaked- in-whiskeysmoke.
