Jorma & Friends ~ NY Guitar Festival 2/6/08 ~ Tribute To Lefty Frizell
Sat 2/16/2008 2:11PM
As part of the Annual NY Guitar Festival, Jorma Kaukonen performed, along with a host of other musical luminaries. Performing in various combinations of impromtu Trios and Quintet ensembles, were Larry Campbell (mostly on pedal steel!), Barry Mitterhoff, Jim Lauderdale, Teddy Thompson, Jim Campolongo, Teresa Williams, with most of the members of Ollabelle (absent Amy Helm, who is expecting a baby soon) serving as house band. I'm sure I'm forgetting somebody, but you get the idea.
It was a wonderful night of tribute to Lefty Frizell. It seems Jorma handpicked the musical artists to be celebrated in this 4 concert series. The 3 previous were Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, Lorreta Lynn, and finally, Lefty Frizell. I honestly didn't know his songs, except for the famous Willie Nelson cover "If You Got The Money Honey, I Got The Time". But his catologue was a great mix of Pure country, blues, and even rock n roll.
The performances were worth the cost of admission alone, just to see Larry Campbell's beautiful Pedal Steel work all night . Lefty's songs , as my friend said, reflected a pretty stormy or bluesy love life, with lot's of heartbreak. Jorma came out towrds the end of the program, sang and played his usual brilliant finger picking guitar.
AN Australian duo, the Yearlings, started the program off with their first U.S. appearance, and they were also really great.
All in all, a great musical night in NYC
