Asking my music community to step up and set the example.

I feel blessed to be part of such a great community of musician and supporters. And I think we have all witnessed how we try to help each other out when one of us is in need.

I want to ask all of us to step up, reach out, and start helping those who live around us who are in dire need. People you've never met, but might just live right down the street from you.

My local paper, The Roanoke Times, has ran a couple of articles about the growing demand for assistance in our area for food and shelter. Here is the most recent:
http://www.roanoke.com/news/roanoke/wb/190892.

I'd like to ask each band, and music store, to pick an organization to work with and GET INVOLVED.

For example, one of my drum student's mothers is organizing some fund raising for the 2nd Harvest Food Bank here in Roanoke. She had this great idea that I intend to make happen for the ensembles I work with. What she suggested was that each band ask their fans to bring a non-perishable food to donate. She even explained that if you have food in your cupboard that is not too past it's expiration date and HAS NOT BEEN OPENED YET, you can donate that.

Even pass the hat for an organization and MAKE SURE THEY GET THE MONEY.
My student's mom explained to me that for every dollar donated to the 2nd Harvest Food Bank, they can buy $6 worth a food with that ONE dollar. So if you only get $10 in donations, THEY CAN BUY $60 worth of FOOD for some hungry souls. What a bargain!!

If you are a band or music store in the areas around Roanoke, and would like to do this, I will volunteer to make sure what ever you've gathered get's to the 2nd Harvest Food Bank. I'll be glad to provide proof that I did get your contributions there.

From what I know, most who will read this are like me, wishing to lose the pounds. So we obviously are looking to eat less this year (as I have gathered from several peers attempts at their new year's resolutions). So give that extra portion to someone who really needs it.

If you are not into the 2nd Harvest Food Bank, find some other organization you are into AND GET INVOLVED.

TO THOSE WHO ARE IN NEED: Please don't be scared to ask for help. We love you, and we don't want to see you waste away or lose your home. If you are behind on bills, ask for help. If we can't help you among ourselves then there are organizations we can go to. Wendy and I have done that for friends in the past as we can and you know we will again.

Here are some links to some of the organizations in the Roanoke area.
