New Distance-Radius Algorithm
Hey all,

Just a small update from the engineering team here at JamBase. We've recently changed the way that we calculate the distance using a radius around some location (zip code or city). This means that you may (or may not) see a slight change in the results of your location-based show searches, as well as your New Show Alerts.

The discrepancy is quite minor but if your missing a venue you knew was included before, you can simply increase your radius.

Our apologies if this caused any sort of inconvenience. As always, please let us know if you run int problems using our Bug Form.

On Rotation Lately

Here are a few albums that I cannot stop playing lately. It always happens weird for me... I find a few discs that I play until I am totally sick of them and then I go find another handful. I really depend on and appreciate the JamBase CD Reviews. They're usually on-point with most of my tastes.

  • The Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely » I think this the best of album of the year. Amazing production, killer songs and catchy licks!
  • Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks - Real Emotional Trash » Malkmus is the man! Love this disc just as much as I did Face the Truth
  • Black Keys - Attack & Release
  • R.E.M. - Accelerate » I wasn't sure what I would think before I started playing this album. It had been a long time since I felt any interest in listening to REM, but this is a really really great album.
  • Flowmotion - Is That Right

Exciting Things Afoot at the Circle K
There sure are a lot of really exciting things happening over here at JamBase. We are thrilled to be providing so many great new features and are even more excited about more coming up.

My personal favorite is the New Show Alerts, which allows you to get an email every time one of your Favorite Artists adds a show in your area (based on the Zip code in your account). This is incredible as it's very difficult to track ALL your favorite bands even when you check the web daily. It's sort of like Ron Popeil says in his infomercials, "Set it and Forget It!"

Also, we've got JamBaseTV, which has tons of great content, a lot of which is real live footage from our editorial staff, but also in conjunction with StimTV. They've built some really cool technology over there and it's very addicting to watch. Enjoy! Here are some of my favorite videos thus far:  (and there are tons more!)

The other are the widgets, which is also pretty sweet. Our location-aware widget will display shows for your favorite artists in the viewers local area. Spread the word to GO SEE LIVE MUSIC and add a widget to all your social networks including MySpace, Facebook, blog and so much more!

New Discovery: State Radio
I don't know where I've been, but I've just never heard of State Radio (www) before. I saw the newswire today and decided I would pull them up on JamBase Rhapsody. I listened to "Year of the Crow" and I think it's an awesome disc!  It's classified as Jam Rock, but I don't think I would call it that at all.  What would I call it? I dunno... ROCK. But I suppose that's just too broad these days.  Good CD, check it out.

I kind of thought to myself while listening, this sort of reminds me of Dispatch, and it turns out that they DO appear in the "Related Projects" on Rhapsody, meaning at least someone was in both bands.  I'll have to look for more info. They're playing Bonnaroo, so things must be going pretty well!

Artists I'd Like to See in 2008
We're all committed music fans. We've all seen probably hundreds of shows, some perhaps thousands!  Here is a list of artists I would love to see in 2008.
  • Yeasayer -- this album blew my gourd! Listen to this band!
  • Akron/Family -- This band can play the best brown note ever. Sadly I missed them in SF last time 'round. DYING to see them.
  • Iron & Wine -- never seen him before, would love to see him on the tour with Califone
  • Rotary Downs -- I want more from the Downs! These boys created a phenomenal disc.
  • The Whigs -- their new album "Mission Control" is unbelievable!
  • Josh Ritter -- he's on fire! Really breaking out more and more
  • Vampire Weekend -- what a great sound. Very unique.
  • Ryan Adams - I just saw him for the first time and I need more!
  • Built to Spill -- still haven't seen these guys! But they have 2 nights at the Fillmore soon!
  • Efterklang -- wow!  What a band... I'd kill to see Akron/Family with Efterklang
  • Radiohead -- still haven't seen them either, but the chances are slim
  • El Ten Eleven -- this duo blows my mind, old skool Slip-syle.
  • Wilco -- duh!
  • Cold War Kids -- missed most of their set at Bonnaroo, but still relaly dig their debut
  • State Radio -- just haering these guys for the first time lately, I dig!

A Kids Record from MMW
I took the new Medeski, Martin & Wood CD a first spin. I laughed, I thought it was great. I was grooving and learning! I will listen more for sure, and just saw it afterward in the Rhapsody feature slot.

Focus the Nation on January 31st
More than just one day, Focus the Nation: Global Warming Solutions for America is an unprecedented educational initiative, involving over a thousand colleges, universities, high schools, middle schools, faith groups, civic organizations and businesses. Focus the Nation is a catalyzing force shifting the national conversation about global warming towards a determination to face this civilizational challenge.

The Berkeley Institute of the Environment (BIE) will be participating in this initiative. I'm pretty sure that I'll take the day off so I can attend this event. While this is not at all about any one place or state or university being better than the others, I would not rather attend this event anywhere but in Berkeley, CA. The BIE website for this event has some great information and a cool footprint calculator. See where you can attend this event in your local area. Search Enhancement Group
Hello Friends!
I wanted to be sure to let you know that I've put together a new Group on JamBase. We're working really hard at enhancing the search results all over the site. We see that this has been an issue with some of you and want to be sure that we are providing the results that everyone expects!

High Sierra!
This is so the best festival out there. Not because it has 2 ferris wheels, but that it has none.  Not because they give out heady laminates, but because they have none (ok, maybe a few)!  Because the little ones enjoy it too. Because it's not Bonnaroo and I don't want it to be! This is definitely my favorite festy.  I wish I were better with words, but this review says it all and more.

Recoveroo
Wow, Bonnaroo is one insane event! The size, the people, the music, the fun, the sun -- the ferris wheel!! It is truly amazing to witness such a production at that level. Seeing the amount of planning, work and coordination for such a huge festival moves me to give mad props to the people at Superfly for putting on the country's largest music festival of the year.

To all of you who came by the booth to check out the New JamBase, thanks for your support and taking the time to swing by. We feel that the booth was a huge success and reached many fans from all walks of life to show them how and why JamBase is the website for Live Music.

A person needs a vacation from a festival like that! We are back to the office and working hard on getting the new site launched for everyone to enjoy. Booth at Bonnaroo 2007
Hello my fellow JamBasers! 

Bonnaroo is just around the corner now and we are all very excited to have a presence at one of the largest music festivals in the scene.  Please come by to say hi at our JamBase booth in the Sonic Village.

We'll be there to talk about the new website, our plans for JamBase and also just to let you know that your favorite website (jambase.com) is run by great people (and serious music fans) ... not robots!
