HELLO, hello, (hello), is there anybody in there? Just would like a moment of your web surfing time to hype the upcoming Houston Jones extravaganza par excellence tout suite en croute con carne, à la carte, per favore.

This Saturday January 28th at 8 pm we return to the Sutter Creek Theater in Sutter Creek (easy to remember) with special guest Joe Craven, fresh from his triumphant tour performing before the crowned heads of Eureka. It is a pleasure and a challenge when Joe is on stage with us, so come by and try the home-made gelato before the show.

February is shaping up as a HJ California whirlwind. You Central-Coasters can see us Saturday February 4th at a SLO Folks Concert in San Louie Obispo, and valley-ists in Bakersfield Sunday February 5th at Juliana's Art Studio/Gallery (pre-purchase tickets). Saturday February 11th is the Palms in Winters with the wondrous Susie Glaze and the HiLonesome Band. Hi-ly recommended. February 12th is the SF Bluegrass/OldTime fest (in San Rafael? go figure), and if you can't make Winters, Susie and the band will be there as well.

Just a few more. On Friday February 17th we'll bring our Brillo to the Camarillo Cafe in Camarillo CA down in LA-land (yeah, I had to look it up). Saturday February 18th is a house concert in Claremont, just south of Mt. Baldy, all covered with cheese (again LA-ish). Finally home again, home again, jiggity-jig with a house concert in San Leandro on Friday February 24th. Then on Saturday February 25th, we're at Armando's, an East Village club that fell in a wormhole around 1972 and popped up in downtown Martinez.

Upcoming live radio performances include KCBX (90.1 FM, San Luis Obispo) at 3 pm on Saturday February 4th; KKUP (91.5 FM, Cupertino) at 8 pm on Thursday February 9th; and KDVS (90.3 FM, Davis) at 11 am on Saturday February 11th.

There's the usual and more at our web site, and don't forget the upcoming folk-frenzy of us and Stevie Coyle at Kuumbwa in Santa Cruz on Saturday March 31st. I for one am really looking forward to playing with Stevie again, and so should you.

Your friend in-situ,

Henry

July, 2011 Houston Jones Newsletter by Chris Kee - bassist

Independence Day is past, the tests all came back negative, Peter’s quarantine is about up, and so Houston Jones emerges from its recovery period from the Driving Like Crazed Weasels Tour of Greater New England.  There was of course a time in our collective lives as musicians when Touring was a largely limitless exercise consisting, at least in my case, of illicit conduct punctuated by intervals of loud noise.  This tour we seemed to spend a lot of time playing to Unitarians.  Which is not to say the tour was without incident (the 1000 dollar taco; the police raid of our gig in Woodstock (!))  all of which you can read about at http://houstonjones-highoctaneamericana.blogspot.com/

In any event, we barely had time to decompress from those adventures before we were off to the Kate Wolf Memorial Music Festival in Laytonville, CA, where among the many pleasures was performing with our long time cohort the incomparable Stevie Coyle.  In classic festival fashion we also met (and invited onstage with us) an astonishing young fiddle player named Karl Kummerle, 17 or so, barefoot, suspenders, shaved sidewalls and fluorescent purple hair, steeped in the Tradition, but who runs in a community of players who mix old time, punk, and freight hopping, as God is my waitress.  Keep your eye out for this guy.

Turning now to the business at hand, this month brings the customary varied menu of venues: Friday, July 8th we’ll be in Point Richmond, CA, as part of the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Point Richmond Summer Concert Series.  We’re honored to be sharing the bill with the fabulous Stairwell Sisters.  They start at 5:30; we go on at 6:45. Then on the 10th, Hojo returns to Don Quixote’s International Dance Palace in Felton, CA, on another double bill, this time with our friend, bluegrass powerhouse vocalist Susie Glaze and her Hilonesome Band. The show starts at 7:00.  And finally, another outdoor show on July 16th, this time at the Benicia Historical Society (is there some sort of subtext here?) for a Spenger Garden Concert Series show, starting at 8:00 in the p.m..

We’re also looking forward to August, which takes us back to the Good Old Fashioned Bluegrass Festival, to a benefit concert in Half Moon Bay, and on a spin through Southern California, about which more in the next installment.  Until that time, follow along in your hymnbooks at houstonjones.com.

Houston Jones November 2010 Newsletter - by Henry Salvia, keyboards, accordion

Hola, fun-seekers!

Henry Salvia from Houston Jones at your service, with an update on HoJo doings. We've been busy little bees, what with lurching around the state and rinsing out our rally thongs (Giants!, f*** yeah!). Thanks to all who attended the Glenn Houston Birthday Revue at Rancho Nicasio, and the many friends who came out on our SoCal swing and the amazing show at the FAR-West conference in Santa Clara. A rare treat to cram the stage with us, Stevie Coyle, Bev Barnett, Caren Armstrong, and Blame Sally all at once! And we fit! And man, what a sound. Big fun was had by all.

Couple of nifty things coming up. The Mamma Llamma Coffehouse (the 1-m Moma, she's a museum, the 2-m Momma, she's a scream) in cosmopolitan Weaverville this Saturday November 6th, Armando's in Martinez, the other city by the other Bay, Friday November 19th.

Other special events coming up include an Anniversary Celebration at the Sierra Nevada Brewery in Chico, city of light, on Monday November 15th. This show includes us, Roy Rogers (no Trigger, sorry) and the inimitable Joe Craven. Tickets are going fast, so check out http://www.sierranevada.com/sierra30.html.

And our favorite general store with full bar, the San Gregorio General Store on Sunday November 21st, with special guests the Magic City Chamber of Commerce, featuring our own Chris Kee and Peter Tucker. This is an early show, with Magic City starting at 11 am, HoJo at 2 pm. Chris and the amazing Jane Selkye also play each Tuesday in November at the Bazaar Cafe in dowdy old San Francisco. If you've never heard Jane, you really owe it to yourself to see them. This is as good as singing/songwriting gets.

Thanks for listening, and remember: fear the beard, but you really want to fear Peter Tucker's rally thong...

Henry Salvia

August, 2010 Houston Jones newsletter from Peter Tucker
FANS, FRIENDS AND FAMILY - We wanted to thank you so much for your support of the recent Freight and Salvage gig - not only the quantity (a riotous full house!) but the quality. Your warmth, generosity and enthusiasm sparked the magic vibe of the evening. Make no mistake - YOU were the stars of that show and on behalf of the band and myself, I want to make sure you know how much we appreciate the best fans in the solar system.

The band is back to woodshedding our new material in preparation for the next CD recording - hopefully to start in October. We already have just about enough new stuff plus a couple of tunes we've been saving from past sessions.

Houston Jones has a number of special gigs coming up this month, as we prepare for our September travels to Kansas and the Walnut Valley Festival. As always - see our website at houstonjones.com for details:

This Friday August 6th we're at Mission City Coffee in Santa Clara.  This is a Fiddling Cricket Concert, sponsored by our very good friend Dick Brundle and will feature a “tweener” set by our comrade, folk god Michael Stanton.  Plus, we’ll be plucking and plunking on Dave Stafford’s “Friday Folk Off” show on KKUP 91.5 at 5:00 p.m. before we head over to the gig, so please tune in.

Saturday August 7th we’re off to the Sutter Creek Theater - another great old establishment in the middle of the foothills gold rush country. This one includes very special guest - Mr. Joe Craven, with his usual virtuosity, haberdashery and maxillofacial skeletal artifacts.

Sunday August 15th - The Good Old Fashion Bluegrass Festival in Los Pinos (near Hollister) - we play at noon ---big fun in a beautiful setting (you can camp).

The following weekend, we head North, first to the Six Rivers Brewery in McKinleyville, CA on August 20th, and then to the Friendship Hall in Pistol River, Oregon on the 21st for a show sponsored by the Pistol River Concert Association.  This is our first time at both these venues, so anyone within the sound of the surf up there on the North Coast, please come on by and tell your friends.

We finish out the month at one of our favorite venues, the Cameron Park House Concerts in, as the name might suggest, Cameron Park CA.  Simply a wonderful place to play and hear music.   That’s August 28th, at 8:00 p.m.—go to our website for contact and reservation info.

And speaking of the solar system – don't forget the Perseid meteor shower peaks the nights/early mornings of August 12th and 13th. If you can get to a dark, clear sky you should be able to see at least several meteors per hour.

Your Friend,
Pismo Pete Tucker
