Novalima Nominated for Latin Grammy
The Afro-Peruvian futurists Novalima have been nominated for a Latin Grammy in the category of BEST ALTERNATIVE ALBUM for their critically acclaimed release Coba Coba. Hailed as "a modern sensation" by the New York Daily News and included in the Huffington Post list of the "Top 10 Global Artists to Check Out in 2009", this year solidified Novalima's place in the forefront of the international music scene. The album's nomination to receive a Latin Grammy is the latest accolade for one of the most exciting bands on the Latin scene today.
On Coba Coba, Novalima delved deeply into the African roots of Afro-Peruvian music, bringing in influences from its musical cousins reggae, dub, salsa, hip-hop, afrobeat and Cuban son. Taking an organic approach to the production, the album more accurately reflected the live sound of the band than their previous recordings. British producer Toni Economides, a regular collaborator of Nitin Sawhney, Da Lata, Bugz in the Attic and 4Hero among others, added his special touch to the album's mixes. The resulting album is a modern approach to Afro-Peruvian music that has made the genre accessible to a younger and wider public.
The milestone 10th Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards, set for Nov. 5 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, will be broadcast live on the Univision Network from 8 – 11 p.m. ET/PT (7 p.m. Central).

Zimbabwe's Afro-Soul Diva Chiwoniso to perform at WOMAD this November

Zimbabwean Afro-Soul singer and songwriter Chiwoniso will grace the stage at the prestigious WOMAD festival in Spain this November. This year the WOMAD festval returns to the Canary Islands for another weekend of music, arts and dance from around the globe - all in the beautiful beachside city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Chiwoniso will perform along side with other world class artists including Eliades Ochoa, of Buena Vista Social Club fame, funk vibraphonist Roy Ayers, and the great Malian singer Oumou Sangaré.

Chiwoniso's musical influences range from soul and R&B to reggae and rock, the entrancing sounds of the mbira serve as a central underpinning for her personal and ground breaking take on Zimbabwean music. Originating in the ancient Shona civilization of southern Africa, the mbira is a musical instrument made of metal tines attached to a wooden board. The player plucks the tines with their thumbs to create captivating interlocking melodies, which have accompanied ceremonies and celebrations for countless generations. While variations of the mbira exist across Africa, it is an essential element of Zimbabwean music tradition and carries deep historical, cultural and spiritual symbolism.

Cumbancha released Chiwoniso's Rebel Woman to critical acclaim last year. The album was praised by the New York Times, the Village Voice and the Observer Music Monthly who said, "There is something miraculous about this album." Rebel Woman was also a favorite among radio DJs and topped CMJ New World chart and the World Music Charts Europe for two weeks running.

The venue, as in previous years, will be the Parque de Santa Catalina - a city square close to the centre of Las Palmas, and just 200 metres from the Playa de las Canteras, one of the island's longest and most spectacular beaches.

The Idan Raichel Project's New Album "Within My Walls" Out Now!

With his second international release "Within My Walls",  Idan Raichel and his multicultural ensemble returns for a tour of major US concert halls beginning March 22.  For more information, check out or click on the image above.  0 Comments :: Permalink :: Thu 2/26/2009 9:53 AM

With his second international release Within My Walls, the Israeli superstar
and his multicultural ensemble return for a tour of major US concert halls.

“This one-man Middle East peace accord makes music that is an ambitious celebration of multicultural diversity. The ethnic elements are cleverly rewired with modern grooves to create an ambient journey that thrillingly bridges the traditional and the modern.” --The Times of London

FEBRUARY 2009 – On the heels of an explosive rise in popularity, record-breaking sales and sold-out performances across the globe The Idan Raichel Project is embarking on a tour of major US theaters this March. The cross-cultural collective will be present songs from their new album Within My Walls, which is to be released by the Cumbancha label on February 24th. With an expanded lineup and a powerful new show, The Idan Raichel Project’s tour will thrill their longtime fans and impress the group’s ever-growing following.

Within My Walls was recorded while Idan was on tour throughout the world, during recording sessions in hotel rooms, backstage dressing areas, private homes and other impromptu settings. Along the road, he collaborated and recorded with Colombian singer Marta Gómez, Cape Verdean luminary Mayra Andrade and the silken-voiced Somi of Rwandan and Ugandan heritage. His poetic lyrics reflect these travels and contemplations; sung in Hebrew, Arabic, Spanish, Cape Verdean Creole and Swahili, the songs address the struggle for personal fulfillment and the true meaning of love in a conflicted and complex world. The result is a deeply moving collection of songs, overflowing with rich melodies, engaging poetry, stunning vocal performances and intricate arrangements.

“To say that everything that has happened in the past six years was the fulfillment of a dream would imply that I even dreamed that any of this could happen,” notes the humble Raichel, whose rise to fame was as much a shock to him as it was the skeptical Israeli music industry executives who said his multilingual, cross-cultural fusions would never find mainstream acceptance. Now, with a string of radio hits and concerts at the Sydney Opera House, the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles, New York’s Central Park SummerStage, not to mention concerts in India, Hong Kong, Mexico City, Moscow, Singapore, and more under his belt, Raichel admits that the reality has exceeded even his wildest dreams.
