According to Billboard.com Phish's latest album "Joy" has debuted at #13 this week with sales of 29,000.
Am I the only one who finds this to be both a surprising and fairly pathetic number? The band and execs have to be disappointed by this showing. It wasn't as if this album wasn't given sufficient hype and most media outlets touted it as a big comeback.
Still the album fails to even outsell the fairly underwhelming "Undermind" from four years ago despite the hype and ramp-up from the successful summer tour.
What gives here? Not that I'm completely bogged down by commercial achievements but 29,000 stinking copies? Come on! I would have thought Phish would have sold more copies than that just from those who attended their concerts this spring/summer. Not to mention the other 300-million Americans that could have chipped in.
"Joy" is a good album from a band that has been pretty buzz worthy in recent months. Obviously Phish isn't as popular as I would have thought. Maybe that's a good thing in a way, but it's also an indictment on the truly sad state of the music industry anymore...
