New Sound Underground is a genre-defying, Minneapolis-based ensemble who has built a reputation around their energetic & riveting live performances, and is quickly becoming one of the most respected names among musicians & audiences alike. While their influences include such instrumental music heavyweights as Soulive, Weather Report, The RH Factor & Snarky Puppy, their music is a well-developed fusion of varied inspirations. It’s this ultimately soulful, yet inventive balance which makes their music so compelling for audiences of the most careful listeners or carefree revelers.
May of 2011 marked the release of their well-received debut album, "Lipofunktion," under their original moniker, P.B. & The Jam, at Minneapolis’ famed funk capital, Bunker’s Bar & Grill. Not wanting to waste any time, they promptly reentered the studio to begin recording their sophomore effort, "Pocket Protectors." In April of 2012, it was released at a nearly maxed out capacity Whiskey Junction where they have held a strong residency every Sunday night since 2010. Since these momentous album releases, they've given 25 states, dozens of Minnesota & national music festivals, and hundreds of thousands of people across the nation the pleasure of their sulfuric, unique expressions. Even now, New Sound Underground is already preparing their next studio project, which is sure to mark a departure point in the growth & evolution of the band, to be released in early 2013.
Despite hailing from various places over the country – the Pacific Northwest, the South, the Upper Midwest – New Sound Underground’s members have all become mainstays in the Minneapolis music scene in such wide-ranging genres as hip-hop, reggae, jazz, salsa, funk, R&B, and gospel. This convergence of diverse experience has developed into a natural group dynamic & is a diligently defining characteristic of their unparalleled, signature sound.
