The THE BAND Band: A Tribute to The Band
The THE BAND Band was conceived in the winter of 2007, the brainchild of lifelong friends and Band fans Jack Kraft and Gary Solomon. Sharing a love for the music of The Band, they formed this tribute band for the sheer enjoyment of playing their songs. They enlisted the talents of Vinny Nicosia, Mike Corbin, and Josh Radin, and after months of careful listening and practicing, they emerged with a rich and impassioned set of Band songs.
The THE BAND Band made its debut performance the following summer, and since then they have played at theaters, clubs, and festivals throughout the Northeast, sharing the stage with such notable artists as Richie Havens, New Riders Of The Purple Sage, and Marshall Crenshaw.
"We're somewhat unique, as tribute bands go, because practically nobody else is covering The Band. We want to preserve the authenticity of their sound, their arrangements, and most importantly, the spirit of their live shows. We don't play our versions of their songs, we play their versions. We use the same instrumentation they used – not just guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards, but accordion, mandolin, fiddle, even tuba. Musically, it's both challenging and gratifying to us, and the response of our audiences has been better than we could have dreamed. Clearly, there's a huge demand for just what we're doing."
The Band is undeniably one of the greatest and most influential groups in the history of rock and roll. Their 1968 debut album, Music From Big Pink, was ranked #34 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the top 500 greatest albums of all time. Their farewell concert in 1976, The Last Waltz, featured notable guests such as Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, and Neil Young. Documented by director Martin Scorcese, it is widely considered to be one of the greatest concert films ever made.
The THE BAND Band brings these classic songs to life with authentic, spot-on renditions of The Band's legendary catalog, including "Up On Cripple Creek," "The Weight," and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." Drawing their repertoire from The Band's seminal period - from Big Pink to The Last Waltz - they showcase the astounding breadth and depth of The Band's distinctively original Americana music, mixing the well-known hits with obscure gems. They have performed "album shows" (The Band, Stage Fright) and recreations of historic concerts such as The Last Waltz, Woodstock, and the Watkins Glen Music Festival.
While The Band may be long gone from the stage, The THE BAND Band is keeping their sound and spirit alive and well!
