Twin brothers Jason (bass) and Larry Alen Jarrell (drums) and Dave Klemencic (keys) form the core of the LarJar Band. Based out of Richmond, VA, the band was assembled over the winter of 2007-8 to piece together fresh jams, soulful covers and some deep experimental funk. A regular weekly gig at Cary St. Cafe has been the proving ground for this outfit, honing tunes and sharpening improv skills over extended sets of music. The band has shared the stage with such talent as the Former Champions, Southside Funk, Silo Effect, Central Garage, members of 11th House and Grinding Stone and many more. As of late, the band has been performing original music and covers from such wide-ranging influences as Robert Walter and the Greyboy Allstars, the Beatles, the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Radiohead, the Benevento Russo Duo, Phish and Medeski, Martin and Wood, Bill Withers, the Band, and the Jerry Garcia Band.
The band regularly incorporates guest musicians, and has formed a longstanding relationship with guitarists Justin Huppmann of Southside Funk and Matt Walton of the Former Champions. Both guitarists have performed well over a dozens hows each with the band. Bassist Todd Herrington of Modern Groove Syndicate and the DJ Williams Projekt has performed with the band, playing the bass as a tenor instrument to compliment the band's grooves. Horn players Jonathan Gibson (saxophones), Lucas Fritz (trumpet) and Alex Powers were incorporated into the band's 2008-9 New Year's Eve performance as well as numerous other shows. House turntablist DJ Gumby has spun with the band, providing opening/mid sets and on occasion jamming with the band.
The band has hosted two festivals (LarJar Fest I in November, 2007 and II in October, 2008) that featured a great sampling of bands including Silo Effect, the Former Champs, Richmond Engine #3, Space Heaters and many more. A new festival is currently in the works, more info coming soon.
