Girls Against Boys began in Washington, DC as a side project of Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty, with Eli Janney (bass/keyboards), and Scott McCloud (vocals) who was then a member of the Dischord band Soulside. After recording three songs, Brendan departed, so Eli and Scott recruited the rhythm section from Soulside (Alexis Fliesig on drums, and Johnny Temple, on bass) to flesh out another three tracks which would eventually be released as the ā90s vs 80sā EP on Eli's label, Slate Records, in 1990.
