23 year-old Tyler James doesn't look half as old as his record collection. Listening to the likes of Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, and Bob Dylan, his songs draw a weary ear in. Born near Seattle and raised in the conservative midwest, Tyler moved to Nashville in 2000 to study and to get out of the small towns he grew up in. He puts out lo-fi recordings every now and then full of sunny melodies over mellow indie-folk and brit-pop and recently released his first proper EP with Nashville producer Jason Lehning (Guster, David Mead). With plans to record his first full-length record in early 2006, after spending a lot of the past year on the road, Tyler is trying to bring back music that actually matters to people.
"Tyler James' vulnerable lyrics, uncontrived vocals and memorable piano and guitar arrangements make for a sound as accessible as it is meaningful". - Paste Magazine
"Masterfully subtle indie-pop artist (Tyler) James is helping rewrite the music city rulebook." - All The Rage (Nashville Weekly)
"An understated, melodic singer songwriter specializing in lush, piano-driven pop, Tyler James has an unadorned, vulnerable vocal style that grows on you - much like fellow nashvillian josh rouse - adding complexity to deceptively simple lyrics. James sounds like an old soul though he's only 23 (and looks about 15)." - The Nashville Scene
