Reverend Slanky is an 8-piece band that covers the entire spectrum of dance music. The band can move seamlessly from a heavy hittin' funk tune to a salsa without batting an eye. The most impressive part of this band, however, is the fine bunch of musicians that make up the band. Everyone is studying music currently or has graduated and is pursuing other music related endeavors.
Band leader Cody Hollow is a phenomenal percussion player and lead singer. His academic background in percussion and voice lends the authentic sound to the Cuban and African tunes, while his voice harkens back to singers like James Brown and Bill Withers.
The rest of the rhythm section are no slouches either. All of them are fantastic jazz players, which makes any improvisation an interesting and unpredictable affair. Chris Entz's guitar playing is hard to categorize. He can shred like Trey Anastasio or lay back and put the groove down like Grant Green. Bryan Bakevich on keys uses the Fender Rhodes to keep the groove in the pocket and keep people dancing. Phil Stempen on bass brings the energy to the next level with his clean lines and head banging capabilities. Last but not least, Sam McKenzie on drum kit is the rock. Even though he is the youngest member, his time and tastiness makes his one of the most sought after drummers in the state.
As members of many jazz and classical ensembles, this horn section knows how to play together. Every articulation and dynamic is beautifully matched, making it sound like one huge instrument. Jarom Hein hits the top note with his full trumpet sound. As a Tae Kwon Do instructer, he is also the band's personal bodyguard. Chad Reep's trombone sound is huge, rounding out the bottom of the horn section. On tenor sax, Sam White is the man to watch. His solos are incredibly funky and energetic. Once he steps up for a solo, LOOK OUT!
Reverend Slanky recently won the PBR Montana band of the year, competing with dozens of bands across the state. Any show that they play turns into a high energy dance party. This gem from Montana is guaranteed to keep you movin' all night long.
