A vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter, Steve Taylor has worn
many hats of late, including neo-Beatle-esque tunesmith, Duane Allman
inspired urban gospel guitarist at Center of Hope C.O.G.I.C Church, and
organist in the progrock inspired Taylor Woodhouse Duo, which had a brief
volatile residency at San Francisco's Boom Boom Room last year. A former
Deadhead, music school dropout, and obsessive vinyl collector, he's been
zoning in on writing and recording pop music the way they used to make it,
with soul, vision, and a conscience.
On February 10th, 2008, Steve Taylor debuted his new full length disc "Has
the Size of the Road Got the Better of You?" at Cafe DuNord in San
Francisco. A song cycle about being lost and found on the road of life, it
was recorded over the last 3 and a half years, amidst an array of trials and
tribulation. Playing with a passion and honesty that's lost on most
contemporary artists, Steve merges the heart-on-your-sleeve confessional
style of Joni Mitchell, the northern soul of Van Morrison, and the pop hooks
of T-Rex, sprinkling in a bit of progrock keyboards, creating a soundscape
that's both modern and unironically influenced by 70's AM rock. Playing
nearly all of the instruments, including a palette of pre 1980 synths,
electric pianos and organs, Steve also asked friends Marco Benevento and Joe
Russo, aka the Benevento Russo Organ and Drums Duo from NYC, to take part.
The result is something that fans of My Morning Jacket, Dr. Dog, The Slip,
and Neil Young will certainly approve of!
After the arduous and inadvertently long labor process of this album, and
the backlog of songs it has created, Steve has decided to post one new song
per week on www.myspace.com/stevetaylorband for the entire year! Check back
for the onslaught of tracks!
