Jakob Freely
Jakob Freely In just under 3 years, Jakob Freely has gone from a "quirky and aloof" acoustic duo to an acoustic pop trio that UNSIGNED Music Magazine pegs as "possessing some of the best aspects of the indie artist." Since their inception in the Fall of 2003, Jakob Freely has stayed as busy as possible, managing to release a LIVE album (LIVE @ Cardo's), release and re-issue their self-titled studio debut, make it to the second year of their very own festival (FreelyFest), appear in the indie film "Will to Power" (Linda Blair, Johnathon Breckman), and record a LIVE ep titled Loyola EP Session I, which showcases newer material slated to be on their sophomore release.

Their self-titled debut, Jakob Freely was given a 4.5 out of 5 by the aforementioned UNSIGNED Music Magazine, who also stated that the album has an "alternative sound that should gain a large following." Applauze Magazine, based in Minnesota, calls "Jakob Freely" "distinctably upbeat and refreshing." Always looking ahead, the boys decided to ready themselves for their next project by recording their newer demos “living room style” LIVE around a single microphone in a friends apartment. The result is the Loyola EP Session I. The disc possesses JF crowd favorites such as "DogFarm" and "Radio" as well as older unreleased material like "Chase" and "Mr. Wizard." Dave explains JF's new direction. "Every band needs to grow, we just decided to start writing more melodic material instead of straight party music all the time." Drawing comparisons to early Guster, the new JF direction still holds on to the "ireverance and humor" that the original Freely sound possessed, while leaving room for more melody and instrumentation. “We’ve even been trying to expand our shows,” Bobby says “recently we’ve added someone on mandolin and upright bass.”

As the boys round the corner going into their third year, the focus remains on recording another album, continue touring, and making sure FreelyFest continues to grow. If you haven't made it out to a Jakob Freely show, be sure to keep an eye out for the boys when they come through your area. Shannon Murphy, Co-host of the Morning Mess in Indianapolis says it best, "They are a breath of fresh air...I swear. If you haven't heard them yet, take a listen. Once you listen, you'll be addicted I promise."
