The beginnings of Kansas City's VEDERA (formerly VEDA) reach back to the pairing of Brian Little and Kristen May during 2003. Kristen’s uniquely powerful vocals and Brian’s inventive, ambient guitar riffs served as a foundation for the band and with the addition of Jason Douglas on bass and Drew Little on drums in the spring of 2004, VEDERA was complete.
We all grew up listening to such a broad spectrum of music, anything from JOY DIVISION, THE FOO FIGHTERS, A PERFECT CIRCLE to BJORK and COLDPLAY” Brian explains, “and it’s those sounds that inspire much of our music.” Since its inception, VEDERA has made an strong impact playing with local bands in Missouri and Kansas as well as opening for national touring acts (THE GET UP KIDS, THRICE, ACCEPTANCE, MURDER BY DEATH) bringing their captivating sound to a wide variety of audiences.
In the summer of 2004, VEDERA collaborated with Ed Rose and Black Lodge Recording to record their first six songs, five of which appear on the EP, "This Broken City". These first recordings served as a teaser in anticipation of the band’s debut album "The Weight Of An Empty Room" slated for July 2005. “Ed really understands how to focus our sound,” states Brian, “we were grateful for the chance to work with him.”
Though new to the scene, their live performances continuously amaze audiences. These dynamic shows are largely responsible for the growing buzz surrounding this young band. For a band who'd never been outside of Kansas City, VEDERA has caught the ear of some influential bands. THRICE, ACCEPTANCE, and COPELAND all came across their music on the internet and asked the band to open shows with them. Heartfelt lyrics, beautiful melodies, a tight rhythm section, a strong work ethic, all dramatically infused into a fantastic live show makes the future very bright for VEDERA.
