Based out of Philadelphia,StillWillis consists of Dean Gorfti (drums), Raphael Cutrafello (keyboards, Rhodes Piano and vocals), Matt Helm (guitar and vocals), Chris Grunwald (guitar, bass and vocals), and Mike Caroto (guitar, bass and vocals). Chris and Mike alternate duties on the bass guitar adding a unique twist to the typical rock band roster. The considerable improvisational skills of each musician keep the audience involved from one note to the next and ensure that no two shows will be the same. The release of their first cd, Ghost Cats with Wings, has garnered the band much praise and airplay on Philadelphia’s respected radio statio, 88.5 WXPN.
A shared musical taste for such bands as The Beatles, The Grateful Dead, and Wilco, along with top notch songwriters like Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, and Elliot Smith brings the members of Stillwillis together for a seamless musical blend that has been aptly described as Acid folk. The majority of the songwriting responsibilities for the band are provided by the considerable talents of Matt, Raph, and Chris while Dean’s drumming provides a seriously danceable groove. The distinctive lead guitar of Mike Caroto colors the sound with a searing rock and roll feel. With all the members taking turns at the microphone (sometimes spontaneously) the vocals move from a chilling subtlety to bombastic choruses reminiscent of The Band or Weezer.
Perhaps the most distinctive aspect of Stillwillis is the vibe achieved at their live shows. With a very dedicated following and an extensive mailing list, Stillwillis consistently draws laid back, fun-loving crowds to their performances. The audience picks up on the contagious relaxed approach of the musicians to produce a genuine good natured party atmosphere. First time listeners are consistently impressed with the lack of pomposity and rock star attitudes so common in today’s music scene. After playing such esteemed Philadelphia venues as The Grape Street Pub, Fergie’s, The Khyber, World Cafe Live and The Electric Factory, the members of Stillwillis plan to continue their growth as one of Philly’s premier original music acts. Of course the best way to find out what this band is really like is to come see them play. Check out www.Stillwillisband.com for a schedule of upcoming shows.
