Senate Horse is a band from the Auburn / Opelika area in east Alabama that can be briefly classified as a rock and roll band with a jammy twist. Senate Horse has succesfully wooven styles such as jazz, funk, blues, and even bluegrass into many of their extensive and intricate songs which has led to the formation of their unique and original sound. The band has always pursued and exemplifies a family type situation because all of the members grew up together, enjoy creating music together, and above all are great friends. Senate Horse was formed around 2001 when Alex Ruth (guitar), Peter Folta (drums) and Phillip Stewart (bass) were in high school. The first time Alex and Phil collaborated together, the connection was evident. That actual session spurred the creation of the first original song by the band entitled "Freshman Funk". Senate Horse would later begin playing publicly in late high school and early college (2005) while the members attended Auburn University. The band then took a break as members began to explore different living environments in places such as Alaska, Kentucky, and London. This split also involved Alex attending the Berklee School of Music in Boston, MA and other members teaming up for side projects such as the group "Tau Setti". This period of exploration was much needed as it matured and broadend the horizons of everyone in the band. However, the band returned in the summer of 2008 when it added Blake Catrair on the keys. The new sound was much fuller, stacked with energy, and the reunion of Senate Horse itself was at the least magical. The band recorded two nights of opened ended and completely improvised sessions that summer which would appear on the album "Improvised Roman Numeral Production" when it was released on December 4th, 2008. Since then the band has been steaming full speed ahead using their approximately 40 original songs and counting as vehicles to showcase their musical expressions as well as their talent. Senate Horse is full of energy, creativity, uniqueness, and puts on a great live show. If you like good original music then this is an act you need to check out!
