"Savannah's Best Rock Band of 2007" – Connect Savannah
Turtle Folk originally evolved from the band Wassaw Sound in 2000, which featured Jamie Shanks on guitar and vocals, Charlie Murray on bass, and Sean Pelliccione on drums. After high school, Jamie and Sean began jamming on a regular basis with Joe in his basement in Atlanta, which is where "Spiderman" was written in its basic form. This was also the site of the first collaboration with bassist Zack Vogtner who happened to be living with Joe at the time. During the summer of 2003, Jamie, Sean, and Charlie collaborated with percussionist, Ross Sparks, and formed a four piece. After playing a few open mic nights at J.J. Cagney's and Daiquiri's on the Bay, the band found itself playing its first real gig at J.J. Cagney's on July 12, 2003. That evening the band featured Joe on guitar, who never left, and a guest appearance by Michael "Turtle" McCormick on a rendition of Neil Young's "Cortez the Killer." Something clicked that summer night, and shortly thereafter, the group added Michael McCormick to the mix and became known as Turtle Folk. Later in 2006, Ross became a permanent fixture on percussion. Finally, in late 2006, as if to come full circle, Zack Vogtner joined on to round out the current line up.
Turtle Folk is part southern rock, part organic techno, and part psychedelic jam band. Taking cues from many varying genres of music Turtle Folk creates a musical environment that is ever-changing. Hailing from Savannah, Georgia they incorporate ripping guitar solos along with a rock solid percussion tempo rounded out by bold and soulful vocals that when blended together, creates a soulful and improvisational 'get down and boogie' sound that is all their own - it's downright Coastal Georgia Rock!
