Big Monkey is a four piece band that includes lead singer Ryan Zanetich's unique, rich voice and phenomenal acoustic guitar, Bill Prout's jaw dropping keyboard play, Vin Thomas keeping the beats on the drums, and bassist Doug Teitterbaum's funky grooves.
Formed in Red Bank, NJ in 2003, Big Monkey quickly became a favorite at the Jersey Shore bar scene, including regular shows at the Downtown Cafe in Red Bank. In 2004, the band recorded a four song demo CD which included original songs "Stripe Bass Fishing", "Chainsaw", and "Understanding"; and a cover of the classic hip-hop song "Top Billin". By the end of 2004, the demo CD had spread among Monmouth County. As each show attracted more people, a cult following of the band seemed to develop. However, in 2005, the band's former bassist left the group and relocated to Florida. Without a bass player, Big Monkey took the next two and a half years off from playing gigs.
In 2008, the band recruited Doug Teitterbaum to fill the void on bass. They have added a number of new songs to their repertoire, which Zanetich had written during the time off. Big Monkey made their triumphant return to the stage in the summer of 2008 with a couple of shows, highlighted by the July 3rd show at Red Bank township's annual Kaboom Fireworks Festival in front of over 1,000 people. They are planning to record their first full length album by the end of 2008.
