Outside The Box
Outside The Box Outside the Box is a blues-based Americana rock band from the Jersey Shore. The group consists of Jeff Cafone (Guitar, Vocals), Mark Masefield (Hammond B3 Organ, Rhodes, Piano), Warren Thieleman (Bass Guitar), and Francis Valentino (Drums, Percussion). The band is embraced by “new school” and “old school” forces alike. Their ability to blend classic elements of rock with a modern flare and a driving blues-inspired poppy edge, have quickly developed OTB into one of New Jersey's most dynamic new bands. Outside the Box can also incorporate interpretations of classic tunes into their set at any time.

The band was formed in October 2004 while all of the members were still in high school. At 14 years old, OTB had a regular spot at the Wonder Bar and the now-defunct Crossroads Bar in Asbury Park where they opened for many national, regional, and local acts. The band has played the Red Bank Jazz and Blues Festival for the past four years and is a member of the Jersey Shore Jazz and Blues Foundation. They backed up national blues and jazz educator T.J. Wheeler at the festival for two years. The Monmouth County Arts Council invited Outside the Box to play at their annual Gala. Southside Johnny, Bobby Bandiera, and local restaurateur and keyboardist Tim McCloone joined the band on stage. OTB was asked to open for Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes at their 10th Annual New Years Eve concert at the Count Basie Theatre.

The Stone Pony in Asbury Park has become home base for the band. OTB had the honor of being the Stone Pony Summer House Band in 2008 and was asked to continue the residency in 2009. The band received Asbury Music Award nominations for Best Blues Band and Top Young Band in 2006 and 2007. At the 2008 Awards, they won in both categories. Masefield was nominated also as Top Keyboardist and Cafone as Top Male Vocalist. In fall of 2008, Outside the Box closed for legendary jam band Govt’ Mule. They also performed on 105.7 the Hawk as part of a “Live from the Pony” music series in late 2007. OTB was featured on 90.5 the Night WBJB during an hour-long program.

Recently, the band has started branching out into New York City venues such as Sullivan Hall and the Bitter End. The Jersey Shore Jazz and Blues Foundation asked Outside the Box to represent them in Memphis, Tennessee at the 2009 International Blues Challenge Youth Showcase. OTB plans to continue writing original songs and release their first album in early 2009.
