Throwback
Throwback From a town in the midst of solidifying its reputation as an indie music goldmine, Throwback is emerging as a unique export from their native Montreal.

With influences drawn from such diverse genres as roots rock and hip-hop to jazz and folk, the foursome's music is an original blend that has put them in the company of the college rock greats that laboriously tour the New England college/prep school circuit. While inevitable comparisons have been made to the likes of Guster, Dispatch, fellow-Canadians Blue Rodeo, G. Love, and even CSNY, Throwback has truly developed their own addictive fusion of acoustic-based pop-rock fuelled by seamless vocal harmonies, a strong instrumental foundation, and innovative percussion.

Throwback was formed in early 2002. Singer/songwriter Erik Lind and percussionist Micah Shapiro teamed up with lead guitarist Mike Libis to form the musical foundation of the current band. In the fall of 2003, as the original trio welcomed bass player Dee to the group, Throwback’s momentum began to accelerate.

Having expanded their sound and potential, Throwback entered the studio in May 2004 with the help of long time friend and producer Nathan Picklyk to work on their first full-length album. Most of the recording took place at a historic converted church located in the heart of downtown Montreal. “We weren’t complete strangers to the studio. We had done a couple EP’s,” recalls guitarist Libis. “But laying down these tracks in this big old empty church Nathan had found for us, with the reverb and everything – it brought something new to the whole process.”

The end result - Border Crossing - was released in August 2004, and was supported by a comprehensive fall tour that saw Throwback make its way to the North East, Mid-West and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. The album drew accolades along the way, and sold through its first 1000-copy pressing in just four months, as Throwback played with popular acts like Virginia Coalition, Stephen Kellogg & the Sixers, Speechwriters LLC, Zox, Pico vs. Island Trees and State Radio (feat. Chad from Dispatch).

As Throwback continues to play to new and welcoming ears in the US and Canada, audiences on both sides of the border are persistently captivated by charismatic songwriting, energy-rich performances, and the endearing level of intimacy the band manages to retain with its crowds.

Backed by an impressive repertoire of original material, Throwback has become a legitmate member of the independent circuit, and looks towards the future with optimism. In the band’s most immediate future is a follow-up record. “Border Crossing was recorded just before we hit the road for three months,” explains Lind. “Most of those songs took new on new life in our live setting. Plus, the road is a creative place. We came home and realized we have this overflowing inventory of new material that’s just aching to be recorded.”

Thanks to an active touring schedule, an ever-expanding Internet-based buzz, and a tireless D.I.Y. approach, Throwback continues to see its hard work pay off. “We’re playing places now that are hundreds of miles from home, and there are people in the front row singing along to our songs.” Lind admits, “It still catches us off guard sometimes... it's just such a great feeling to realize there are people getting something out of what we're doing.”
