ON THE CORNER BRINGS DA FUNK TO L.A.

Long a fixture of the L.A. music scene, Santa Monica's The Temple Bar has faced stiff competition recently from all-ages venues like the Knitting Factory West and House of Blues, which are booking an increased amount of jam-friendly musicians as well as acoustic-based songwriters. However, the Temple Bar's friendly staff, wine list, delicious quesadillas, and easy street parking still make it the best spot on the West Side, bar none. The Temple Bar's formula is simple: provide great music and a relaxed atmosphere and the patrons will come.

Joel Bowers
Now the Temple Bar introduces ON THE CORNER, a new bi-monthly series that features the ten-piece funky music machine The Greasy Beats, along with some of the best and brightest bands and DJs that L.A. has to offer. Co-presented by KJAZZ 88.1 FM (www.kkjz.org), ON THE CORNER brings the strict, straight up, 100% heavy funk, soul, and boogaloo directly from the old school every other Wednesday night. ON THE CORNER is guaranteed to satisfy even the most discerning L.A. hipster.

The Greasy Beats are L.A.'s newest and hottest jazz/funk ensemble and the band features many talented SoCal musicians including members and former members of Robert Walter's 20th Congress, Cake, The Breakestra, Pseudopod, Dogfysh, The Southland, Nikhil Korula, and Jive. Surprise guest appearances by some of the best players in the L.A. scene, or even just musicians passing through town, are common at a Greasy Beats show. Many heavyweight stars of new school groove have sat in with the GBs including Stanton Moore, Robert Walter, Brian Jordan, and Steve Molitz to name a few. When it comes to gettin' down, James Brown is the ground for The Greasy Beats!

The Greasy Beats' leader/saxophonist Joel Bowers (also of JB and The Rebellion) is excited about the ON THE CORNER series at the Temple Bar. "We're trying to provide a dance party vibe with the highest level of musicianship available in L.A.," Bowers says. "With so many talented friends and special guests in the house, each night ends up being a unique musical experience."
