U2: No Line On The Horizon

You know, U2 doesn't have to try this hard. They've made it, and remain one of the only bands on the planet that can consistently fill stadiums. But here they are striving towards something fresh, seeking new sounds with a dogged determination reminiscent of their early uber-Irish days paired with the sophistication of their years. First single "Get On Your Boots" is a bait 'n' switch, a noisy little throwaway that doesn't hint at the meditative grandeur and real subtlety of No Line On The Horizon (released March 3 on Universal-Island), which brings some welcome intimacy into their Big Rock and shows these 30 year veterans have no intention of giving ground to anyone without a fight.

For my own U2 sensibilities – developed right alongside them since the day Boy arrived in 1980 and nurtured in dozens of shattering live shows - No Line is their finest set since Achtung Baby. The two albums share an exploratory, highly switched-on character, as well as the best producers U2 ever snagged, Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno. While the pair did solid work on 2000's All That You Can't Leave Behind and 2004's How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, their efforts were defused by weaker material and other knob twiddlers. No Line finds the ensemble crackling with the same energies that powered The Unforgettable Fire and The Joshua Tree. More plainly, I haven't been this excited by a U2 record in almost 20 years. Like many younger bands, U2 seems seriously fired up by the times we live in, and they've always been at their best when they grapple with the world at large, fearlessly facing down shameful things and finding the heroic in the day-to-day.

Since dear Freddie Mercury took his final bow, U2 has seized Queen's mantle as rock's opera company. Sturm und drang suits them, and there's even a bit of Greek tragedy (and comedy) in their make-up. Like his pal Pavarotti, Bono is blessed with a powerful, stirring instrument in his throat that seems nearly immune to the ravages of age. His flexibility and cleverness here is flucking exhilarating, and played against The Edge's tintinnabulous guitar and the electronica sprinkled "Not Fade Away" primacy of bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen Jr. there's just nothing not to dig about this album. While just four guys live, they stir in a lot of extra color on their studio efforts, and this is full of chromium flashes and pastel washes. While a laughing rave-up like "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight" is great fun, it's the low simmer and heart tug of "White As Snow" and "Moment of Surrender" that stick the most. The latter is perhaps their best song in a decade, harking back to moving classics like "A Sort of Homecoming" or even a calmer "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." When they turn it up on "Breathe" (or even "Boots" as placed in sequence) the sheer force of them is strongly felt. When they're firing on all cylinders U2 is a tangible experience for listeners, and their pistons are REAL well greased here.

While an easy target – as any band seated upon pop culture's dunk tank will be – U2 is also a terrific band, one for the ages, and the evidence of that can be found inside No Line On The Horizon, a potent, timely and moreover, vastly enjoyable work that shows twelve albums in they're in no danger of getting soaked anytime soon.

The band continues their weeklong run on Late Night With David Letterman tonight and tomorrow. So far we've seen them shovel snow, read the Top 10 List and of course, plays some pretty cool music.

"I haven't been this excited by a U2 record in almost 20 years." You said it Dennis.

This release is the most pleasant surprise of the year so far. Truly some of their best work in a very long time .

This album (with the exception of 3 songs inc Boots) is very good. Not quite great but it is definitely worth getting if you like U2 or rock music at all. I would put it in their top 6 best works. Achtung, Joshua, War, Boy, Unforgettable, No Line in more or less that order. There are a lot of idiots on Jambase, don't listen to the haters, U2 is still damn good.

their old records are cool for what they are, they have some classic tunes, i guess, but they really are a gang of blow hards... i mean, two of the guys just go by like one name... "The Edge", come on, let's be serious... what do you think his mother calls him?

Announcement of U2's 360° Tour Dates

Today, U2.com announced U2's tour for 2009, dubbed the 360° Tour. As previously reported, it covers two legs, the first in Europe and the second in North America. The initial announcement includes 15 shows in Europe and 16 in North America, with clear gaps for additional shows to be added in some cities, e.g. Dublin. 360° promises to be a spectacle that lives up to its name, with all sides of the stadium offering unobstructed views of the band - although stadium diagrams on U2.com show how the stage's position on the field will favour one side of the venue. As normal, the staging design is by show director Willie Williams and architect Mark Fisher.

The tour schedule includes U2's first concert in Croatia. Sheffield, England receives its first U2 gig since 17 June 1992, plus it is U2's first outdoor gig in Sheffield. In Virginia, U2 are playing Charlottesville for the first time; meanwhile over the border in North Carolina, Raleigh finally gets its first show - over twelve years since the intended first concert on 29 May 1997 was cancelled. U2 are also playing Oklahoma for the first time since their War Tour concert in Norman on 10 June 1983.

As noted earlier, some parts of the schedule contain lengthy gaps between concerts so that extra shows can be added in some markets once the first concert has sold out. Furthermore, don't despair just yet if there are no concerts being held near your city: a recent Billboard report that proved accurate about the first two legs has forecast more shows in both North America and Europe over two legs in mid-2010, plus tentative plans to visit South America later in 2010.

You may also be wondering about support acts. A variety of artists will open 360° Tour concerts. Although none are confirmed for specific shows, U2.com mention that support acts will include Glasvegas, Elbow, Kaiser Chiefs, Snow Patrol, and Black Eyed Peas. This media article provides a little more detail: Toronto will get Snow Patrol and Vancouver will get Black Eyed Peas.

Ok...I went into this with a strong disliking of U2, but i figured, "what the hell I'll just check out the videos, they gotta be popular for a reason." So I watched all the videos to the end, and I can now honestly say that U2 is awful. Complete crap. I was not one bit into their music.

I should have stuck with my gut.

if you don't like U2 because you really don't like U2 that's one thing, but it's another thing to have a narrow mind when it comes to their music. Yeah yeah yeah, Bono's kinda a d-bag and they're all pretty pretentious but this is one of the most influential bands over the past 20 some odd years. And at the end of the day, they know music. The Edge is one of the best guitarists out there(see minimalism), Bono can sing, and I challenge any bands out there today to try and touch what they were doing with Achtung Baby and Zooropa (I'm not a huge U2 fan, but I love those albums). I have a feeling that if some people listened to their entire catalog without preconceived notions about the band, they'd come away with an entirely different opinion.

They are a rock band (and a great one at that)! So, how do you people get off by complaining about a guy being called "The Edge"..? If over the top personas are off limits, then I guess we can disregard David Bowie, Les Claypool, Daft Punk, the Gorillaz and pretty much any rapper and every metal band in history as a ridiculous sideshow.

Get over yourself, lighten up, and open your minds a bit, eh?
