Wakarusa Moves to Arkansas

Mulberry Mountain :: Ozark, Arkansas
In a surprise move, due to difficulties with their original Kansas home, the 6th Annual Wakarusa Music and Camping Festival will take place on June 4-7, 2009 at Mulberry Mountain in Ozark, Arkansas!

That's right! Wakarusa will take place on top of a mountain that's surrounded by streams, waterfalls, swimming holes and scenic float rivers. Mulberry Mountain is not only on private land, but it has all the amenities of a well developed campground. Quite simply, if you haven't been to Mulberry Mountain, it is one of the very best festival sites this fine land has to offer.

In honor of the Wakarusa community's loyalty and in acknowledgement of the weather you suffered through during this past year's event and the subsequent loss of music sets last year, they are making a few tickets available at the unheard of price of $79! Tickets will be available from noon tomorrow, December 11, until December 31.

Also, until Christmas, take 20% off all Waka merch (including the sweet hoodies) using the following code: brrr

Check out our 2007 coverage of Waka here.

WOW, with the right line-up and ticket prices, this could give Bonnaroo stiff competition this summer. The Weather should be a little bit more comfortable than the Manchester midjune heat. The pics I saw of the mountain look like it's a really beautiful place. i may have to consider checking it out this summer.........Line-up and ticket prices permitting.

glad to hear they found a new home. i went to three wakas and never had any problems, but did witness some uncomfortable police action. nevertheless, always a great fest with good midwestern people - hopefully everyone can make it down to arkansas. now lets see a worthy lineup!

After checking out Mulberry Mountain for thier Harvest Fest this past fall. There is videos and reviews of that festival on some of my pages. Check out www.youtube.com/user/mgmathome08 for great live music. I can say that the new location is for sure an upgrade from the hell I went through in Waka 06. I will for sure make it back for Harvest Fest 09, but the line-up will determine if I make it out for Waka.

It sucks for the city of Lawrence, (thanks Kansas) but this is awesome news for the rest of the midwest...no more gay Kansas stuff to worry about, and an equally if not more impressive location than Clinton Lake in KS...hopefully they scale down the fest a little and bring in some really super dope acts...Garage a Trois, Toubab Krewe, The Motet, Everyone Orchestra, Zilla, PRAANG, Panjea, Telepath, JFJO, Charlie Hunter,

Good news!

I must say this is VERY exciting news for me. I live but a meer hour from this venue, and as some have already commented, this is an AMAZING festival site. Been going to the Harvest Fest there the past couple of years and nothing but good times have been had... unlike the shadyness I experienced at Waka '06. And the $79 ticket price 'til the 31st is finally right up my alley. Everyone should make the arrangements to get to this one, and if your a floater, try to stay an extra day to float the Mulberry... the water level was up June of this year, so chances are the floating will be great next year too. Get ahold of me if you have any questions about this fest, I'm a local, and would gladly do my best to talk you into coming.

as a two year "veteran" of mulberry mountain, and a one-time visitor to clinton state park, i could not be more happy about this decision! i'm perfectly happy w/ the smaller festy location. the top of that mountain is one of the most beautiful places in this part of the country. it is certainly more scenic than ks (i'm a ks native so i can say that :) the folks are great and they dont harass you like ks state troopers! as long as the weather cooperates, this should be a festy to remember! waka waka!

to those that somehow still see Phish as the pinnacle of music. Get over it. Yeah, I tried to get Hampton tix, but it sure as hell isn't bringing me back to Roo. If you never get away from the same old show, how the hell do you expect to experience new things, music, people.

Roo is worse and worse as every little teenager that can escape their parents wants to go.

Waka will be my target this summer.

Roo was good for those that truly loved music, but it has outgrown that, into something wholly different, a "scene" where you can "be free." or whatever that's supposed to mean.

Be yourself, love others (as much as they let you) and for god's sake, please go see new bands. Phish has its place and it may be the same as The Eagles. It was great when it was current, but how many times can you relive that "First Tube" or "Gamehenge" show.

Let's all move forward.

This looks like a good move for Wakarusa. If the lineup has some of the names they have had in the past like Galactic, Medeski Martin & Wood, Gov't Mule, etc. then I will definately go. By the way, I am already sick and tired of hearing about Phish, and they have 3 dates. If I wanted to hear a nursery rhyme, then I will read mother goose. Phish's songwriting is more pathetic than Trey's facial expressions when he is playing guitar. I hope Phish does tour, and headlines Bonnaroo, so it gets all the shady dirty wooks out of the scene for everyone else. SCIFreak, your band hasnt been good since 1999, youre about a decade too late. By the way, Colorado doesnt need a festival, they get enough rockin' shows as is.

Good move Waka...it's not CO/AZ/NM/NV or the great CA, but it will do well, as Mulberry comes with a high pedigree. The stories from KS were ugly, and the latest attempted gouging by the park peeps on the Waka peeps was criminal.

Took a drive cross country on Highway 40 some years ago. L.A. to Nashville. After we progressed through the nastiness of southeastern CA, the beauty of AZ & NM and the dreariness of the TX panhandle and western OK, our trip was enlightened by the gorgeous countryside that seemed to stretch from eastern OK all the way through AK. and into TN. Mulberry Mountain seems to embody that countryside, at least in my mind's memory...should be a wonderful place for Waka in 2009 and beyond.

mkane - its obvious to me that you're from another part of the country and are making assumptions based on false stereotypical beliefs. To call us small brain rednecks is completely offensive and sad, and if this is your attitude then by all means, don't bring it (or yourself) here. First off, this festival is in such a rural area that there are no "local police". Second, if you'd been to this venue before, you'd understand that the land is private and very, very laid back. Of course there will be a police presence, but only because the state highway this is located on is a beautiful, winding 2-lane, and traffic will have to be negotiated. That's all

kane - I'm sorry you had that bad experience here, and even more sorry you've chosen to "NEVER visit Arkansas or Missouri again", as both states have many wonderful people, places, and things to offer. Everyone has had different tribulations in their travels... God knows I personally hate the OK HighPo's... but that doesn't mean I'm not gonna make the journey to Tulsa for Umphrey's and YMSB. It just means I'll take extra care to make sure there's no hassles along the way. The only reason I said anything about your comment was because it was so abusive to the place I call home, and I felt the need to rebut. Now, if you'd said "the heart of small brain redneck *cop* country", we'd have been on the same page. Thanks for the good wishes.

Cops in FAYETTEVILLE are pretty serious. It's a college town in one of the fastest growing areas of the nation. Mulberry Mountain is in a whole different area. I haven't seen one cop all the years I have been in the Ozark area. Now, game wardens, that's another story. But they are always reasonable, IMHO. Come on down, bro. rchasei and my crew had a great time last year!
